About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s Westmorland blend is a broken flake comprised of pressed African dark fired tobaccos that yield a cool, satisfying, full flavoured smoke.

At some point I’m going to have to create a chart of the various Gawith Hoggarth flakes, cut plugs, and slices—sometimes the differences are subtle, sometimes they’re obvious.

Whatever the case, this is one of the most finely balanced of the bunch. I’m glad SmokingPipes is clear about the in
gredients: despite the use of “dark fired,” this is a pure Virginia blend much like the majority of Gawith ropes. Dark-fires Virginia shares some of the flavors you’d find in Dark-Fired Kentucky (which I also love), but there’s more of a grilled meat flavor (DFV) than outright barbeque (DFK).

The toppings here are absolutely recognizable as “Lakeland” (to me that means floral, semi-pungent, perfume), and they’re aren’t light—but they’re perfectly applied to allow that meaty, oily tobacco flavor to come through.

Drying is helpful for an easy light, but I think it’s important to avoid losing the flavors that come from the moist flake. What I do is dry some overnight (or even for a day or more) and rub that out into kindling. Then I tear a fresh slice lengthwise into short “sticks” that are just shorter than the bowl’s depth. I pack these loosely, standing up in the bowl, then sprinkle kindling around the edges and on top. Works great and produces a reliable burn and a ton of flavor.

One other note: I’m sensitive to some Virginias, which bite me no matter how slowly I try to smoke them. This one doesn’t bite me. Ever.

5 stars. A treat for Lakeland veterans like me and a great introduction for people just dipping their toe into this type of blend.

This is a wonderful flake! The dark fired Virginias have a bbq element to them without being overpowering in nicotine or flavor. It is in the same vein as dark flake but less robust. It reminds me of old dark fired. I love it!
