Germain's Plum Cake is a traditional pipe mixture of which 80% is prepared from six different types of Virginia leaf. The remaining 20% is a specially prepared black tobacco made from air-cured leaf. The complete blend is then flavored in accordance with a 80-year-old formula, to produce a honey-sweet smoking tobacco with a pleasing room note.

I have been skeptical about this blend due to the reviews. But then, I got my hands on 2 Tins and after one long bowl, I will say that this mixture is pure bliss. Not for me, this one. I did dry it a little from the pouch and it lit and stayed lit well. However, from the first taste, all through the bowl it was sour and really unpleasant. It was so unpleasant that I can't bring myself to try it again. I could taste the wine flavour that some reviewers speak of, but it was more like wine vinegar. I am sure others will have a better experience, but for me, I'm not going to try again....Read More

Way to wet and goopy to smoke when arrives. Bad tongue bite!!! Will not stay lit. Foul odor from the tin. Well, will give it a try again in 3 years, after aging.

To me the smoke had substance or weight on my tongue. It was a little hard to keep lit at first, but after going for a bit kept burning. No bite whatsoever, and I like to pull long, deep, frequent puffs. A hint of some type of fruit... Sloe perhaps? Not sure. Burned down to a nice ash, but no ashy taste at any point in time. At first, I thought the tin note was some kind of perfume. Now, however, I believe it is the wine/spice flavoring, which gives it a smell reminiscent of port. It lights easily, burns well, and the flavors seem to become more pronounced as it's smoked, reaching their peak slightly past half-way through the bowl. This is very unusual tobacco. Very wet on opening. A little hard to keep lit. I will let it dry and try again. Tin note is very hard to define and does not really match flavor in pipe. Overall, a little harsh and not my cup of tea.

I have to admit, at first after a few bowls I put this blend aside. I really did not like it due to the fact that it had an almost black liquorish taste. But after coming back to it, wow. It is full of flavor. And such a unique flavor, it does not taste like liquorish at all, simply a mix of many flavors that give it a one of a kind aroma and taste. I am no expert on tobacco's, but I have smoked enough to tell that this is a winner. For those that buy this blend, If you mix the right amounts of the plum cake with Peterson's Sherlock holmes blend, you get an amazing mix!
