tart that I'd be perfectly comfortable smoking all the way down the bowl. Yet it changes. The oriental leaf and perique come in here and there with sweetness resembling candied fruit with a spicy retrohale that tickles the nose instead of causing sneezing fits. The dark fired cooperates with the latakia in bringing a smoky, burned mushroom sort of earthiness that I cannot get enough of. The burley, nutty and strong, is noticeable mostly in the last third. No matter the change, the flavors in this blend are excellent.
Now let's talk about strength. Plum Pudding, Maltese Falcon, and many others, have such wonderful flavor, but they fall short in this one category. Not Zulu. There is nicotine here, present in such a sublime way. It doesn't knock you over the head with it. This won't give you the hiccups or force you to reach for your drink. It lulls you gently, relaxation coming in waves until you finally notice how stuck to your chair you are... and how glad you are to be there.
That's two out of three, and I've saved the best for last. The mood. The smoke has a thick texture, like I'm sipping a rich hearty soup. The aroma, flavor, and meditative strength all feel like this is a blend made for a sage. I feel like I should be pondering ancient things in front of a fire or in front of a crystal ball, with David Sylvian's Gone to Earth album playing in the background.
I will also add that this blend has legs. The jar I have is from a tin I bought back in November of 2024. It has only gotten creamer, smoker, and sweeter since then. Age will no doubt only serve this masterpiece.
So how do I feel about Zulu? I wish I could tell you to buy this blend, but the truth is, that I don't want you to. Go smoke Nightcap, Quiet Nights, or Ashton's- those are available. They're good, just not my cuppa tea. Join the masses in their mad rush for From Beyond and Palmetto Balkan when they come out. They're decent, sure, but FOMO takes the wind outta my sails.
