I'm a pipe smoker for 2 years, tasted around 20 blends and this is just another level. After smoking this, Peterson's 965 and Nightcap lost its flavors to me...

Smoked this one regularly while stationed in Germany in the US Army and super stoked it finally made it to the States. This is a smooth, heavy latakia blend with smoky, toasty, and incense like flavors throughout. Usually a blend with this many things going on can be a bit of a mess, but Zulu is just a perfect storm of flavor. A stunning Balkan, and one of my favorite smokes of recent memory. A rewarding journey from top to bottom of the bowl, starting out sweet and woody, and the perfect amount of Latakia. Quarter in and starting to get spicier notes, especially on the retrohale (my one criticism being that it becomes almost too spicy to retrohale, but experimenting with a looser pack seems to remedy). Spruce, hay, raisins, a fleeting hit of cognac at the halfway point. Darkens and finishes out with creosote and spice. In my limited vocabulary I just keep coming up with WOW for all these HU blends, haha! But seriously WOW! I’ve tried 3 HU blends now and all are absolutely exceptional! This one is very similar in my opinion to Khoisaan, equally as amazing but just a tad sweeter! Tin note is ridiculously awesome and flavor and aroma are delicious! I’m really floored by these blends! Again similar to a lot of my favorites but also unique and in a class of their own! Said it before I’m terrible at picking out flavor notes but here’s some of my other favorite English blends that this is on par with for me, Old Ironsides, Pirate Kake, Sextant, Plum Pudding, Capt Earle’s blends, Meridian, Blairgowrie, Loch Ness, Black Frigate, Cerberus, Mississippi Mud, and definitely Khoisaan! Amazing first impression of HU tobacco

I’m an English fan and this blend doesn’t disappoint. The Latakia is the star of the show but the black Virginia adds a great sweetness to it and the burley has this wonderful rounded note in the mix too. The dark fired behind everything adds a great woodsy barnyard vibe to the whole blend. The orientals tie everything together with a hint of sourness in a good way. This is an outstanding blend that will now be in my rotation as long as it’s produced. The only reason it’s a 4.5 instead of a 5 is I’m curious to see what a little age will do to it and maybe I’ll come back in 6 months to a year with a follow up review.
