Mac Baren: HH Burley Flake 1.75oz Pipe Tobacco

In trying to understand how to taste various tobaccos, I picked this one up to smoke in order to contrast it with the numerous Va+ that I was smoking.

First, this blend is a great way to understand what Burley is.

Second, it's a great smoke. Rich, hearty, like dark cacao but smoother. Heavy and satisfying. Smokes cool without bite. I'm still learning how to describe tobacco so this review might not be helpful but I think and this blend is worth having to really get close a solid burley forward blend....Read More

At first the dark fires seemed a bit strong after a the tin it seems to me to be a near perfect burley flake perfect moisture out the tin and solid flavor to the bottom of the bowl.No bite near perfect burley flake

A really nice blend that brings the best of burley and the nice Smokey spice of Kentucky. I bought a pound of it after smoking it for a few weeks. A staple.

Tin date Nov 2019 has note of bitter nut, plum, and mild hay. Tobacco flakes are a reddish-brown with a little black and tan. Moisture is good to go. No drying needed. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of bitter nuts, dry earth, very woody, molasses, spice bread, tangy citrus, moderately spicy, mild sweet dark fruit, mild sweet grass, floral, a lemon peel background note, and a peppery retro. Burleys is leading over Virginias most of the time, Kentucky supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is outstanding....Read More

This one was tricky to pin down, I had a couple of bowls before I could get nuances out of it. Starting with mechanics, as expected from HH blends, it is a lovely stack of flakes. A bit moist but can be smoked - though to get most of the flavours I had to dry it - the smell out of the tin is a bit grassy and light. The flakes rub perfectly into almost ribbon shape and packs easily. No issues there. It lights up easily and evenly, it might need a few relights but nothing annoying. First third of the bowl I had nothing but the nutiness of the burley (which I enjoy) but it was really mild, to the point I had to swish my mouth with water to rinse my palate. However, the rest of the bowl starting opening up more flavours, first some faint breadiness from dark virginias I assume and then as the bowl went down, there was a lovely attack of molasses that complemented the other flavours. It burns down completely to a fine ash. No gurgle, no moisture in the bowl and it doesn't bite at all. Overall one of my favourites now...Read More

Need to buy a whole pound. Smoked Burley mixes in the 80's, and this is a fantastic tasting mixture. Burns perfectly. Smells awesome, medium nic buzz. Goes well with a strong iced ( homemade ) coffee. Used a Castello thick-walled stout Canadian on it. Bought a pound yesterday, after testing. It's awesome....Read More

Glad I purchased a pound and some tins. My pipester pal sent me some aged Burley flake. So, I loaded up my long Canadian Castello and went to work. It was almost impossible for me to put down the pipe, very addictive mouthwatering taste. Extra smooth, and mellow, which gave me an OCD snorkeling attack.
