生草：桂圆果肉。
点火后：烟气轻柔。泥土、青草、柑橘、木香，整体的酸甜感非常明显。香料以及胡椒感。一斗过半，佩里克开始加强，过鼻刺激有余韵。烟气略显干燥。尾段各种果酸与果甜来回切换，体验感很棒。
总的来说，就新草而言，它会有更多的果酸，但味道单一，变化不是很丰富，果甜较少，会有些许的新草气，但整体表现不错。期待他陈年后的风味。

y’re easy to break apart. The flakes are moist, no, wet, this is s blend that requires monumental drying. If you want to dry it as a flake it will take hours, so folding is not an option with it. It will be a relighting nightmare. Rubbing is better, it takes almost an hour to be dry enough and it rubs moderately easy. It requires a few relights throughout the smoke and it expands when lit so don’t pack too tight. The tin note is dark fruity and reminds me of dried figs. And the taste of it matches this. It has dark fruity taste with a bit of sweetness to it, almost like a straight dark virginia, I couldn’t get much of anything else. It isn’t a bad taste when you direct it away from your tongue but I found that if I smoke with the mouthpiece towards my tongue it leaves this tingly sensation so I am wondering if that’s was an added casing. It leaves a nice after taste though, again of dried fruit and the room note matches. It isn’t bad but I cannot recommend it and I won’t be buying more. e one of my favorites over the short six months since I first got my hands on some. This was love at first light. A lot of reviews call it a VA-Per, which I don’t classify it as because of the black Cavendish. It lends a certain flavor and mouth feel to the flake that brings it out of VA-Per territory, but in a lovely way. If you choose to smoke this in a dedicated Virginia/VA-Per pipe, you’ll notice a ghost when you smoke a plain VA-Per again. Overall, I love this stuff, and I’ll be back for more. If this tobacco was a neater, more Peterson-style flake, it would get 5/5. A wonderful mix, comparable to Luxury Bullseye Flake (one of my favorites) but a bit milder. I intend to add several tins to my rotation, and several more to my cellar.

Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of mildly sweet tart plums, Rasin/fig, toasted bread, woody, spice, floral, sweet grass/hay, rich earth, mild lemon, mildly acidic, mild orange peel/zest, a tangy savory dark fruit background note, and a peppery retro. e found if you puff around enough, there's also a slight bock or dunkel beer flavor that comes through, not unlike what I've been able to find in other quality VaPer / Scandinavian blends. The tin note is hay, honey, and figs. The room note is fine. Nothing too harsh, but nothing too special. Burns cool, stays lit, and requires only about ten to fifteen minutes of drying time. On the whole, it's not the best of it's kind for me, but it's certainly a good blend to have around. Read Less

and it did not require relighting much thorughout the bowl. Well behaved in many aspects. I thought it was weaker than I had expected, as some have suggested this being an older brother to Old Gowrie, which I enjoy once in a while. Yet, it is not, at least for me. The real problem I have with this flake is the ever so pervasive topping that some many tobaccos have. I cannot stand them, at all. True, that leaves me with fewer choices than most pipe smokers, but that is just the way my taste and body chemistry works. I do not tolerate these obvious flavourings, perhaps, only is there are really at the "extremelyh mild" level (such as in the case of Old Gowrie). The moral of the story is that I did not enjoy Marlin Flake at all. All I tasted was this "mediciny" falvouring/topping burning my tonge with noticeable good tobacco underneath, which for me, it is not enough of a profile to be part of my rotation. Read Less

After those were finished, I went back to the MF and was determined to finish the MF tin before opening another. That's been one of my problems. I always open more tins than I should at one time. Maybe I like variety. Maybe I'm impatient. Most likely, it's the latter. Anyway, I was smoking virtually nothing but MF for about three days and something happened. I started loving it! I had finally "got it," I suppose. I began noticing some of the flavors that others mentioned and I scornfully laughed at before. This stuff is great, but it takes patience and repetition. Like the first time you taste a thick, dark beer. Your first impression is that it's overly bitter. If you drink it slowly and thoughtfully, it becomes much more than that. If you love VAs or VaPers, I would be surprised if you didn't love Marlin Flake, too. Just don't smoke it immediately following strong English tobaccos and expect an epiphany. Read Less

s seemed to have an additive that I feel negated the flavor of the older. I could tell when rubbing it out… seemed more sticky than the original that had the beige labels. It creates more chemical burn than the original... maybe too much Acadian Perique & Rum. I think the change came about the same time K & K switched to the yellow label. Five stars for the original and only around three stars for today's rummy, peppery blend... give or take a few percent, IMHO, of course. I'm staying with Doblone d' Oro, Escudo & Salty Dogs. I don't smoke Marlin Flake any more. It sets my palate ablaze. Something has gone awry with this mixture compared to "days of old." Read Less

a of it begged me to try again. Sure I could smoke HOTW and Old Gowrie fine but I approached Marlin Flake with trepidation.
I finally broke down and bought 2 100gramntins in Jan 2018. Opened it up, it was a little flat but hey, no burning mouth. My how palates change. Fast forward to October and it has come around the bend. Rich and deep Red Virginia funk. Man it is addictive. And with this colder weather it isn’t hanging around.
Cavendish gives a great mouthfeel and the aroma left in the room is Devine incense. I’m glad I didn’t give up.
I Love HOTW and Old Gowrie. They have something unique to each, but the Marlin Flake is the Mystic one. Read Less

tobaccos, please be warned that this Marlin Flake contains a lot of Perique tobacco which has a peppery, spicy flavor. Smoking Marlin Flake is rather like trying to smoke a pepper pot - lots of hot, spicy, fiery and peppery smoke. I don't like it at all - to me, it's like going through a slow drawn out torture - so much spice that my tongue becomes hot (not tongue bite - spice bite) and there's an astringency that can be felt in inner cheeks.
I feel the name of this tobacco is misleading. It should be called Rattray's Hot Spicy Peppery Tobacco - Marlin's Flake doesn't describe it and nowhere on the tin is there any warning of its peppery flavor.
I'm aware that there are many pipe smokers who love this peppery Perique tobacco, and for them this might be a 'go to' smoke. But for me it's only a one star rating for being overly spicy and peppery, which for my taste amounts to an unpleasant experience. Read Less
