About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

A bothy is a small hut designed for use by hikers and travelers, with a number located in the Scottish Highlands. Public shelters stocked with basic accommodations, bothies are communal abodes, functioning off the understanding that any food and resources used be restocked for the next traveler. Samuel Gawith's Bothy Flake was blended for the Kearvaig Pipe Club — a club formed in 2012 at the Keavaig Bothy on Scotland's norther shore — and as a pipe tobacco, it's a mixture of Virginias and Latakia topped with Highland malt whiskey: the perfect blend to enjoy as a respite on stormy nights.

Your rainy day smoke awaits.

Wonderful Scottish!

Product: Samuel Gawith Bothy Flake 50g
First, purists will no doubt complain the added Scotch makes it not a “real” Scottish blend, but so be it. I love it! Dark and smoky and traditional English flavors, but with sweetness and dark fruits, like plums and figs. Delicious! Glad I bought 5 tins before it went out of stock, and sad I ONLY bought 5 tins. Medium strength. Lights and burns easily. Could be an all-day smoke for an experienced smoker....Read More

Scotch and Fermented Sweet Pipe Tobacco... what could be better?

Product: Samuel Gawith Bothy Flake 50g
Ever notice how certain blends/mixtures remind you of a certain instance or place? Bothy reminds me of a quiet evening walk through the winter woods on a misty, damp, cloudy, cold day, with the faint smell of a wood burning on the breeze. Flakes are almost black. The slight tang and briny note of scotch hovers atop a foundation of fermented VA, which gradually builds throughout the bowl. Halfway through is when that full VA flavor, as only Gawith can offer, steps forward. The Latakia is approx 5%. Although applied in a minimal percentage, the Latakia lends a false heaviness. The smoky latakia along side the malty fermented VA and briny tanginess from the scotch, results in a glorious flavor profile. It’s extremely difficult to acquire. Bothy is one of my favorites. Nic is 2.5 out of 5....Read More

It’s all I want in an English blend and this is coming from an aromatic smoker. I was in need of a Scottish blend but this takes the cake. I certainly tast that tanginess and fruity notes

Some blends need more than one bowl to make an impression on me. After my first bowl I still didn’t know what i thought about it. After several bowls I have come to love this stuff. Tobacco arrived very fresh and quite moist. Dark and sticky flakes. Opening the tin reveals a musty smell with a hint of scotch. You can smell the Latakia smokiness also. Kearvaig is in the Scottish Highlands so I can close my eyes and picture the cold, foggy, rain soaked mornings on which this blend is being smoked on the other side of the pond. Although compromised of mostly Virginia’s the smoke is not nearly as sweet as you’d associate with a pure Virginia Flake. The Latakia and the Scotch turn this flake into something pleasantly heavier. I’ll order again when it comes back into stock as these tend to go very quickly....Read More
