About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Like Brown No. 4, Samuel Gawith's Black XX is a traditional rope-cut pipe tobacco of straight Virginias. While Brown No. 4 foregoes any heat treatment, Black XX does undergo such treatment, contributing to its extra-dark color and distinct, slightly more mellow flavor profile — though still remaining quite full-bodied compared to other blends.

Another winner from the folks at Samuel Gawith. You just can't go wrong with either of the Gawith companies. Black XX Rope is dark, oily, smoky, creamy, heavy, cigar-like, a bit sweet, and strong as an ox. Smoke so thick you can chew it. It's a bit mellower than any of the brown ropes – all that stoving really does work magic. I like to slice mine paper thin, leave it out to dry for at least an hour, then rub out the coins into a sort of rough-cut shag. I find this method works better than most others. If you slice it too thick and pack it like a flake, it's tough to keep lit and your pipe will gurgle. Whichever way you decide to prepare it, smoke on a full stomach and have some sugary beverage handy, because if you're not careful the nicotine fairy will kick you in the guts and turn your face green. But given the proper respect Black XX Rope is divine. I see a lot of reviews noting the strength and harshness of the SG XX black rope, and I’ll agree, it is strong. I’ve even seen the word “acrid” bandied around, with one hilarious review comparing XX and Escudo Navy Flake as a “2 inch thick, charcoal seared musk ox liver steak to a 9 course meal at a fine French restaurant. This comparison is obvious hyperbole, but that being said, once you get this one tamed, it turns into a heavy, cool, sweet smoke. I enjoy it when I’m in the mood for more oomph than Union Square but don’t feel like crossing the threshold into burleys. XX has become one of my favorite blends, and I’d say it’s one of the sweeter blends I’ve had once I got it dialed in. The stuff is no frills. There are no toppings, no weird attempts to add vanilla beans or rum, just pure Virginia tobacco, flue cured and delicious. Preparation of the XX is a labor of love and is absolutely critical to an enjoyable smoking experience. I like to cut off 5-6 coins and rub them into fine shag, then let the shag dry for 3-4 hours. 2 hours was not enough drying time for me, but your mileage may vary depending on how you store it. I then proceed to enjoy a moderately packed bowl with my trusty Peterson 150, with care to take it slow. It’s like taking a step back in time, harkening to simple agrarian days before all of the flavorings and fancy blends came into prominence. A bowl lasts me about an hour and a half or so, and when properly prepared, requires very few, sometimes no relights. I sit on about 48oz of this in my cellar. 抢了一盒，刚到手就迫不期待的打开，开出来是一股腌制味，又油又黑。剪碎了来上一抖，刚入口就感觉很荤，但不会腻，烟气非常舒服浓郁，很好燃烧，控制的好可以不用补火，没有弗吉尼亚的甜感，有点回甘，非常爽口，抽到中断感觉很愉悦，应该是尼古丁给的很足，平时我更偏爱拉草，属于比较重口.室韵应该很差，属于抽的人香闻的人受不了的一款，适合自己独自享受，重口味老饕的必备斗草。这么独特的风味，你也应该试试！
