About This Pipe
In 1825, François Comoy founded a pipe factory in the village of Avignon, near the now-legendary French pipe making haven of Saint-Claude. Though Comoy pipe makers wouldn't begin using briar for a few decades, the company was the first to do so. François' grandson, Henri, moved to London as a young man and helped popularize briar pipes in the United Kingdom and would later form a partnership with the Chapuis family in the early 20th century to form Chapuis-Comoy.
The company produced this pipe for The Tinder Box, a chain of smoke shops. With a lengthy, oval shank and a brief saddle stem, this is a classic specimen of the Lumberman shape and features some lovely flame grain on the top and underside of the shank and the front and back of the bowl. In all, the pipe carries a slight weight of just over one ounce, making it especially portable for having such a lengthy shank.
