About This Pipe
Roman Kovalev, the Russian artisan behind Doctor's Pipes, brings a diverse background to his craft—having worked as a distiller, race car driver, and pediatric neurologist, the latter inspiring the name 'Doctor's Pipes.' Known for his playful, whimsical approach, Kovalev's portfolio spans from traditional pieces to eccentric designs, often featuring unorthodox accents and silhouettes influenced by the Japanese school of design. His motto, "Life is filled with smoke and friends," perfectly embodies the spirit of his work.
Proudly showcasing Doctor's penchant for organic designs, this Rhodesian features a shank extended by a section of light knuckles of bamboo that immediately draws the eye. The fore features a heavy-set bowl with a single beadline set at its wide waist, demarcating the bowl's upward taper toward the rim. The bowl is positioned on a dual-paneled heel, which creates a pointed look in profile. Additionally, the trim shank and stem at the rear accentuate the bowl's substantial proportions — the pair taking an arching bend that promotes a comfortable smoking posture. The broad bowl takes advantage of all that extra canvas to display some swirling birdseye above the beadlines and lively flame grain below. Continuing the organic motif, the long stretch of bamboo is capped with boxwood, and there is a section of boxwood crafted to mimic an enlarged bamboo node. Lastly, this piece is stamped "Grand Flash," one of Kovalev's highest grades, placing it among the upper tier of the artisan's portfolio.
