About This Pipe
Toronto-based carver Julius Vesz first became acquainted with pipe making while growing up in Hungary. Inspired by watching his grandfather carve meerschaum pipes, Vesz would later pick up the pipe-making craft himself. He started crafting pipes in 1959, granting him more than 60 years of experience in the craft and a keen eye for shaping. Those talents are on full display in this Freehand, which was crafted in 1999 and features a distinctive bowl defined by a pronounced, chin-like heel and a rim crowned with rugged plateau. The stummel is finished in a combination of smooth and rusticated textures, with the upper portion of the bowl left largely smooth and dressed in a warm stain that highlights the briar's natural character. Complementing the composition is a warmly colored acrylic stem, whose rich hues harmonize beautifully with the stummel's finish.
