About This Pipe
Showcasing equal parts organicism and dynamism, this Acorn Sitter from artisan Ping Zhan is a masterfully rendered piece. The bowl's high-set waistline is softly inflated, making for a beautiful juxtaposition with the flat, narrow heel on which the pipe rests. In addition to its ballooning, rim-ward flare, the bowl also demonstrates a prominent forward cant — its walls curving forward with an impressive sense of fluidity.
Behind the bowl, the shank-and-stem arrangement demonstrates its own sense of fluidity, as well as plenty of visual rhythm thanks to the stretch of carved horn and the subtly cinched shoulders of the saddle stem. The former is carved specifically to resemble bamboo, and its resemblance to the plant is quite astonishing; Zhan spared no detail in imitating the material's grooved, bump rhizomes, and the result is breathtaking. A high-contrast stain finishes off the stummel, highlighting stunning grain that coincides perfectly with the briar's distinctive, dynamic shaping. Undoubtedly one of Ping Zhan's most impressive designs, this Acorn is a necessity for any admirer of artisanal, organically inclined pipes.
