About This Pipe

Luiz Lavos formed an interest in working with wood when he spent time in his grandfather's workshop in Brazil as a child. He pursued a career in design, particularly graphic design, and would end up applying principles from it when he became a pipe maker. Luiz has a wide array of connections and influences, but his work adheres most closely to the Danish functionalist style, albeit with cues taken from his home country, such as accents of cow horn.

This Apple verges on Nosewarmer territory at just over four and a half inches but in that brief length manages to pack in plenty of features to attract the eye. The horizontal rustication of the bowl provides a wonderful touch and a look similar to that of a beehive, a comparison accentuated by the tapering walls of the bowl. The finish Luiz used on the portion of the bowl that is not rusticated is incredibly smooth, making the touch that much more irresistible. The rustication continues vertically on the shank, which is capped by an accent of dark brown horn that heightens the piece's relationship with nature. A short, tapered vulcanite stem finishes this excellent work of Luiz's making, one that will satisfy any fan of fine rustication and fine craftsmanship.
