About This Pipe
J. Alan pipes are handmade in San Diego, California by Jeff Gracik, the artisan imbuing his work with a distinctly Danish aesthetic while hewing close to the style of the American masters, expertly balancing plump curves with robust musculature. This Bent Apple is a fantastic example of both that style and of Gracik's skill for implementing unflinching organicism in his work, nearing Nosewarmer proportions while displaying ample substance through the bowl. Said bowl stands on a rather muscular heel that's pronounced near the underside, but swiftly lifts as it nears the fore wall, sweeping into a mid-set waistline and granting the pipe a surprisingly varied appearance. From the profile, the bowl assumes a far more rotund, spherical look, while the view from the fore presents a broader, more distinctly tapered aesthetic that's heartier at the underside. Overlooking the bowl, the rim is possessed of an understated chamfer into the chamber, emphasizing the bowl's contours nicely thanks to its soft edge. The transition is rather wide, with plenty of space to drape a digit if necessary, giving way to a short, curling shank that's here paired to a densely populated stretch of bamboo. This bamboo extension boasts six total knuckles of the dense grass that are oriented remarkably well to guide the eye from bowl to stem, forming a rippling pattern reminiscent of ring grain and highlighting the organic expansion, contraction, flattening, and lift of the material as it reaches for the stem. The junction is marked by a trim band of black vulcanite that continues the flare of the bamboo's end into the stem's base before a slim saddle bit arcs out and makes a smart downturn to the button. At the junction, the vulcanite accent band features a series of dimples that extend the presence of many small nodes right at the far edge of the bamboo, bridging the gap between natural and man-made. Small and robust, this pipe is a truly noteworthy piece for any other enthusiasts of organically-appointed, rotund smokers, and it's poised for exceptionally comfortable puffing thanks to its smartly arced shank and stem. Dressing this piece is a deep, chestnut-toned smooth finish and subtly glossy top coat, unveiling dense streaks of flame grain surrounding the bowl and lining the shank, complete with an expansive basin of birdseye through the underside.
