American carver Ryan Alden is something of a Renaissance man, with a background in sculpting, leather working, and wood turning, so it seems only natural that he'd try his hand at pipe making, too. His work takes influence from various schools of design, and his portfolio showcases everything from palm-filling hunks of briar to more snug, Nosewarmer designs.

A handsome piece, this Lovat from Alden boasts all of the form's characteristic features, including an upright bowl, a lengthy round shank, and an abbreviated saddle stem. The muscular bowl boasts a firm, upright build, offering a plump, full-bodied heel that rises to a smoothly polished rim. The sleek, elegant lines of the shank and stem keep the shape streamlined and minimalist, focusing most the visual weight at the bowl in almost Italian neoclassical fashion.
