About This Pipe
Tonino Jacono entered the pipe business in 1981, finishing and selling pipes that were shaped by his brother-in-law from briar acquired and drilled by his father-in-law. After two years, Jacono left Calabria — the region comprising the Italian peninsula's southwestern "toe" — and moved north to Jesi, a municipality near Italy's Adriatic coast. Jacono began making pipes under his own name in Jesi, and still does today, with a philosophy of making high-quality pipes at a fair price point.
Jacono eschewed briar for olivewood to make this Volcano, giving it a fascinating horizontal grain pattern on the stummel made all the more handsome by the smooth finish and light stain. The bowl is only lightly conical, giving the Volcano an appearance near that of a barely tapered Billiard. The round shank bends minutely and kicks up into a beautiful stem of swirling green and white acrylic that finishes with a light bend into the bit, a perfect accompaniment to the olivewood and a great finale to this piece.
