A portrait and fashion photographer by trade, John's first introduction to the world — and art — of pipes was through photos of Tokutomi's work. It took years for John to find the courage to contact Tokutomi, but it was worth the wait — a simple email sparked a relationship that resulted in a 2016 trip to Japan to learn from the legend himself. Later, John would get to know Ping Zhan and Sam Cui, artisans already established in the pipe world, and continue to learn from them. As a result of this education, John's pipes are as impressive as one might hope. They are imbued with a sense of organic flow and balance, using subtle tweaks and an easy, natural aesthetic to create pieces that nod to his Danish studies, as well as his own work at innovation.
