About This Pipe
Though the Ardor workshop was founded in 1974 by father-son team Angelo and Dorelio Rovera, the pipe-making history of the family stretches back to 1911, with the founding of Sociedade Rovera in Varese, Italy. It was here that Angelo began to carve pipes alongside his father and uncles, starting at the age of 13 in 1958, Ardor's debut into the pipe world marked by a high standard of craftsmanship that's remained consistent for nearly five decades. Though Angelo passed away in 1999, Ardor is now run by Dorelio, alongside both Damiano and Dimitri, the next generation of Roveras. Ardor's pipes are often typified by their strikingly neoclassical proportions, with each piece offering greatly enhanced substance about the bowl and a reassuring presence in hand. This bent Billiard is a strikingly robust piece from the brand, and it emphasizes the neoclassical style thanks to its decidedly bowl-forward construction. The bowl stands at the end of a remarkably slender shank and stem combination, their comparative slimness pushing the vast majority of the visual weight onto said bowl. The transition is wide, and it gives way to a lifting, tapering shank that reaches toward the stem base, with the stem comprising a tapering stretch of swirling, black and yellow acrylic. Up front, the bowl stands on a sweeping heel that naturally completes the composition's S-curve and bolsters the walls' low-set waist. From the waist, the walls take on an arcing taper to the rim, offering ample curvature in hand and gently urging forward to lend the entire pipe a subdued sense of dynamism. Compared to the shank and stem, the bowl is huge, with more than two inches of height and a commanding musculature that conceals a capacious chamber. Dressed in the Urano series' uncommon sandblasted variant, the stummel displays handsome grain, with dense stacks of growth rings flowing down the bowl.
