About This Pipe

First issued in 1840, the Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp and a defining milestone in the history of global communication. Introduced under the postal reforms of Sir Rowland Hill, it established a standardized, affordable rate for sending letters, fundamentally changing how people corresponded. Distinguished by its refined portrait of Queen Victoria set against a black field, the Penny Black remained in use for just one year before being superseded by the Penny Red. Despite its brief circulation, it endures as one of the most significant and collectible icons in postal history, celebrated for transforming the processing, delivery, and exchange of mail.

Commemorating the 185th anniversary of the Penny Black's debut, these limited-edition Dunhill pipes honor this landmark achievement with thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship. The Penny Black pipe takes the form of a Group 4 Quaint bent Dublin, featuring an oval stem and a subtly extended mouthpiece, and is finished with a sterling silver band engraved "Penny Black." Each pipe is accompanied by a sterling silver tamper depicting the iconic stamp held in tweezers. Highly collectible, the pipe is presented in an elegant leather-bound, book-style case. Additionally, every pipe in the Penny Black line is individually serialized, with this particular pipe being the 7 out of 10 in the Dress finish.
