About This Pipe

The second number in Dunhill's four-digit shape stamps refers to the type of stem paired to the stummel. Most commonly the "4" stem is paired to the English marque's "07" Prince design — the particular mouthpiece slightly elongated and elegantly bent, per the classic Prince form. Here, however, the slightly downturned stem extends from the "06" Pot stummel. Contrasting the shank and stem's lithe curvature and comparatively slender disposition, the bowl is bold and imposing in Group 5 size, with the walls firm and the heel accentuated further thanks to the angled transition.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
