About This Pipe

Considered a master of Danish pipe design and pipe craftsmanship in general, Hans "Former" Nielsen began working with pipes at the age of 15, repairing them and, as a result, learning the standards of shaping and engineering. He, then, proved his skills during his time at W.Ø. Larsen, later managing various processes throughout the workshop and training other carvers. He's since cemented his name in pipemaking history and still continues to tutor artisans, welcoming them into his workshop to share his wisdom and expertise.

Here, the Danish great presents a classic bent Egg, full of the supple curves and fluidity so often characteristic of Danish pipe design. Apart from the saddle stem's diminution and the neat chamfer of the rim, not a hard line interrupts this piece. Though compact of overall size, Former has stretched the transition and elongated the shank to lend the profile a more languid disposition that seems to extend the length. Such curvature is, then, accentuated by the balanced recurve of the stem, urging the visual momentum toward the forward-canted bowl. Compared to a previous bent Egg, in which Former highlighted tight-knit shaping cues, this rendition focuses more on elegant poise and fluid motion. Naturally, it's dressed in one of Former's expert sandblasts, showcasing low-profile Danish style and bringing forth the briar's concise ring grain.
