Once a stonemason and sculptor, Frank Axmacher makes use of his background in the arts as a pipemaker, largely self-taught, with help over the years from Bertram Safferling, Tom Eltang, and the late Rainer Barbi. He takes inspiration from the things he finds beautiful — whether that be the work of other pipemakers, architecture, or the natural world. Each of his pipes is handmade, and he prefers vulcanite rods for his stems, though accents can range from horn to bamboo, acrylic, or exotic woods.
