About This Pipe
Louisiana-based artisan J. Mouton fashions meticulously detailed takes on classic forms, often prioritizing full-bodied bowls and clean, sleek lines. This Fugu exhibits some particularly clean line work, even by Mouton's usual standards, with some angular flourishes that breathe new life into this iconic shape.
The ridgelines that frame the bowl come to a crisp point on either side of the transition, giving the bowl's tilted twin panels a distinct teardrop shape. These pronounced panels are further emphasized by a smooth, chestnut finish, which stands out against the dark, smoky sandblast that arcs across the bowl's rim and into the shank. Said shank is rectangular in cross section, yet in profile it still takes on the graceful, fluid curve found in many Fugus. A hand-cut stem of vulcanite completes the composition, its vaulting posture and wide expansion disc complementing the flaring, upturned shank. With its forward-urging bowl and detailed sandblast, this piece offers a satisfying feel in hand, and a kiss of plateau on the bowl's right flank adds even more tactile appeal.
