About This Pipe
A storied marque and one of Japan's leading pipe manufacturers, Tsuge produces a wide range of shapes, many of which display a strong Danish influence. One of the newest additions to the marque's lineup is the Tomahawk, a highly stylized design that takes cues from the classic Poker shape while emphasizing practicality and distinctive presentation. The pipe comes complete with a matching tamper that fits into the underside of the bowl, while the stem features a push-mount arrangement for easy removal.
The bowl is crisply paneled and set to a forward-urging stance atop a sloping heel, giving the composition a dynamic profile. In silhouette, the contrast between the bowl's solid presence and the lean stem lends the piece a resemblance to a tomahawk, especially with the tamper protruding from the base like a feathered accent. There's also historical inspiration behind the design, as Native American pipe tomahawks combined the form of a smoking pipe with that of a functional tomahawk, often incorporating a bowl into the poll opposite the blade. Tsuge's interpretation nods to that history while maintaining a modern, sculptural aesthetic, the paneled shaping even recalling the appearance of hand-worked stone tools. This particular example is finished smooth in an inky stain for an all-black, moody palette.
