Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Kendal Dark
Kendal Dark
Ended up with this accidently, 4oz instead of Kendal Gold. It sat arounds for a year before I had the courage to smoke it. I was under the impression it contained burly or Kentucky which quickly wrecks my mouth. To my surprise, it was pure smooth fire cured VA with a lovely center core bitter sweet elegance. It smokes great outside in the cold unlike many other pure VA blends. The nicotine is medium to strong but I found this to be a repeatable daily winter time smoke....smoked in 5 minute sessions. I smoke this when pruning my apple trees in winter....it smokes well all day. I am looking forward to a warm spring Saturday morning to linger over a big bowl full, a cup of coffee and the WSJ. It might rattle my nerves smoked in one long session but the solution is simple, just put the pipe down and come back to it later.
Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Brown Twist
English Virginia Deluxe
Brown Twist Sliced... love it as a blender. This is the only pipe tobacco I have smoked that has rattled my nerves in 55 years. The nicotine concentration sublimates the full array of VA qualities and flavors. I have smoked this straight 10-12 times in small bowls but it is much better when blended with another VA to reduce the % nicotine concentration. I blend it with Kendal Gold and/or Bright CR ,,,,even 70% Brown Twist sliced and 30% CR bright works for a strong smoke. Lovely rich VA character with tangy leathery notes. Even takes to a little added perique. When this is blended with other milder sweet VA's, the flavor reminds me of Ashton's old Brindle Flake or some of McClelland's great Virginias.
