Kendal Dark = Dark Birdseye = Kendal Kentucky
December 23, 2024
Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk
According to the GH&Co sales representative, Kendal Dark, Kendal Kentucky, and Dark Birdseye are the same blends. Why is smoking pipes selling the same tobacco under different names? To avoid cognitive dissonance perhaps? Either way, if they run out of one, say DBE shag cut, you can get the shag or vintage cut from the other two listings. GH&Co is good about answering questions via email if you need to verify this....Read More

Good & Strong

My palette is not refined and I am unable to pick up on the nuances many are able to speak on. However, I can tell you that this is good quality tobacco: strong and delicious. It's a bit dark, heavy on the mouthfeel, and has a certain sweetness which comes and goes throughout the smoke. I paired it for the first time with a dark roasted coffee this morning and it was sublime. It brought me back to a time when a younger version of myself would stay up until the early hours with friends no longer here and we'd drink coffee, smoke our cigarettes, and talk about life and the mysteries surrounding it. Make no mistake: this does not taste like cigarettes! It merely reminded me of those times. If you enjoy strong tobaccos which pair well with coffee, then I suggest you check this out. Since it is a shag cut, I recommend packing it tighter than you normally would so that it doesn't burn too fast. Sip this instead of drag it. It has a tendency to get hot and when it does, I have found that it becomes slightly acrid. My favorite pipe to smoke this in is a Peterson 150 Spigot....Read More
Fantastic Smoke

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk
First off, the cut is fantastic. Sometimes I don't even need a second light after my prelight, and often it burns the whole way through a bowl without issue, and leaves little to no dottle or dampness. Fantastic! Now that that's out of the way, it is ready to smoke as is (for me at least)- and extremely easy to pack. It likes to burn hot, so I sip it very slowly, which brings out the sweetish smokiness very nicely. Puff too quickly, and it takes a slight bitter taste and gets very peppery in the nose. There is a slight Lakeland essence, but it burns off mid-bowl leaving a wonderful dark-fired Virginia taste. The taste is strong, nic-hit strong, and room note is strong but not unpleasant. The wife approves. Great quality tobacco....Read More

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk
Package note of mildly tangy, mild barbeque and musty vegetation. Tobacco is a shag cut of brown, dark brown and a little light brown. Moisture content is good, a few pipe smokers will want to dry it a bit. Burns moderate to fast with few relights. The strength is strong and nic is medium to strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of sweet hay, spicy, sugar, bread, savory, rich dirt, nuts, wood, dry, floral, acidic, mildly sour, peaty vegetation, mild herbal, citrus peel/zest, a tangy dark fruit background note, and a very peppery retro. Virginias are leading with some support from the Kentucky. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More
great blend

This blend is for the experienced Enthusiast with plenty of up front flavor.
While on the stronger side of profiles, the blend has a lot to offer.
Recommend to all Enthusiasts and seasoned newcomers looking for something more in a blend.
UPDATE::::
Having more time in the jar has allowed
this blend to play a trick on the profile.
While not a strong example of Gawith Hoggarth flavoring, within a short time it has shifted towards what I call a “floral cigar” style flavor.
My long and continuing enjoyment of cigars has brought me a few chances to know cigars with a floral hint to the profile. I wont give the list here but they are a bit hard to come by and highly prized when found.
So this pipe blend has started to offer flavor in line with some of those high quality cigars.
I will admit the two tobaccos arrived at that point in different ways yet I find the experience similar.
I credit the natural flavorings used by GH which meld and enhance the tobaccos which are of good initial quality.
Without my prior taste experience I would still enjoy the flavor of this blend, I simply can explain to others with a small amount of clarity.

This is great stuff. I don’t often smoke it by itself, but I use it in a great many of my blending endeavors. Hearty, deep, smokey Virginia. Can’t go wrong.
Dark VA with Cocoa & Anise
August 30, 2021
Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Dark Bulk
There's no Lakeland in this. Unlike our C&D or Pease mixtures, this one is much less tangy than a red VA, and possesses no citrus from the bright VA. Perhaps it's the casing but this is woody sweet with a slight anise flavor. It's a little one-dimensional in comparison to the more complex flavors of the Red and Bright VAs. This also possesses a decidedly cocoa flavor to it... wow, I could really taste the chocolate after sipping this and then after a sip of coffee. The mouth feel is creamy and doesn't posses the sharpness we encounter in most VA. Because of this, it won't wear out your tongue and we can smoke this one all day. I usually equate anise and cocoa with burley - not virginia, so it was a little different but pleasant (think sweet chocolate licorice). I absolutely love the shag cut; packing is easy, it burns steady, albeit quickly, stays lit longer and produces gobs of smoke. Sip it. The shag cut will heat up quick, turn ashy, harsh and you'll lose the nuance. The nicotine is stronger than most, and I'd rate this one at 3 out of 5. One to have with a black coffee, but not one I'd consider as an after-dinner tobacco....Read More

This is a fantastic tobacco, creamy, woody, smoky, slightly sweet, slightly spicy. this is a finely cut shag tobacco, so it packs easily. I love it with my morning coffee, it definitely hits the spot. If you're not used to higher nicotine blends, you need to be careful with this one!
I recommend
drying it a little and then pack it and smoke away!...Read More
