Portrait of Adam Davidson by Artur Lopes

Even among artisan pipe makers in our niche industry, Adam Davidson stands out for his unique approach. We recently celebrated Adam and his 20th anniversary at Smokingpipes. A 20-year anniversary at any company is an impressive feat, and even more so as we celebrated 25 years of Smokingpipes this year. Adam has helped develop many of the processes at Smokingpipes that we utilize today in the estates department, and his impact is impossible to measure. Although Adam would likely prefer remaining behind-the-scenes, restoring and crafting pipes in the privacy of his workshop, we want to honor his achievements and celebrate the myriad ways he has helped shape the craft and the hobby.

Adam's Early Years

When Adam was a child, his mother watched classic black-and-white films that often featured pipes, and he was drawn to them in many antique stores. While attending Purdue University, he was already a pipe smoker. One day, on the way to meet with his academic advisor, John Crosby, he acquired his delivery of pipe tobaccos and nasal snuff just in time for the meeting. While scheduling classes, he and John talked about pipes and became friends.

Adam's own story in pipe making truly begins in 2004, when he attended his first pipe show in Chicago with John. Adam recalls the show fondly, "It was a lot of fun. It was my first show simply as a person who had already been smoking a pipe for years. I met some pipe makers, though I had no desire to make any pipes until John began to make some as a hobby." At that show, Adam met pipe maker Todd Johnson, a connection that would lead him to a job at Smokingpipes.

Adam graduated from Purdue with a degree in Industrial Design, and many of his designs went on to be used by large companies. After he graduated, he spent some time helping his father in construction, building and remodeling houses. Over time, he was drawn to pursuing something more creative in his career, though he wasn't sure what that might be yet.

At the Chicago Pipe Show in 2005, he brought the first pipe that he made just for fun in the spring. "It was a smooth bent Dublin with three knuckles of bamboo and a hand-cut Cumberland stem," Adam says. That very same pipe can now be found in Chief Financial Officer Antonio "Tony" Saintiague's office all these years later. Tony isn't shy about sharing Adam's progress: "He has come a long way since then, but that first pipe came out really well and I still smoke it."

Around this time, Todd moved to South Carolina and needed someone to help him make a new line of pipes, Medici Pipes, in his workshop and also to work for Smokingpipes in estate repairs. Adam flew down from Indiana and met with Sykes Wilford, Todd, and Tony in October 2005, then made the move from Monticello, Indiana, before starting his new job in November, two days before Thanksgiving. At that time, Smokingpipes had less than ten employees.

When Adam moved down to South Carolina, he carried all his worldly possessions, or so it seemed, inside of a busted-up pickup truck. Tony has to laugh upon recalling that truck: "It was an adventure any day whether or not he would be able to make it to work." Sykes confirms this story, adding: "He had this very old pickup truck that somebody sold him for $1. It's a miracle that he made it from Indiana and then continued to drive it for another 10 years." Adam kept a collection of blacksmithing tools in the back of the truck so that whenever it broke down, he could just put it back together himself. "Trucks and those particular tools don't usually go together, but he found solutions."

His skills in blacksmithing, beyond fixing his legendary truck, as well as his talent in ceramics applied very well to the art of estate restoration. "We present pipes almost like artwork," explains Tony, "with long-form descriptions and multiple pictures listed. I think Adam wanted to be associated with a company that looks at pipes as objects of art, not just commodities." When Tony first met Adam, he was struck by how interesting he was. "He is a creative, outside-of-the-box thinker. He's extremely passionate about pipes and pipe creation. He is a great asset to the team, and was from the very beginning."

Although the Medici project was short lived, Adam transitioned to working at Low Country Pipe and Cigar, our brick-and-mortar store, in the summer of 2005. Adam excelled while working at the store, eventually becoming the store manager. As he came across various pipes, he inspected them and noticed issues that needed to be fixed. "My own quirky quality control turned into a process we still use to some degree today," says Adam.

Adam in Estate Restoration

Adam managed the store for about three or four years until he became the Estate Manager, the role he continues to hold today. "He established the quality-control processes we use in Merchandizing and systematized them," Sykes explains. A lot of the work done in restoration was trial-and-error for a while, and the process wasn't influenced by the pipe makers themselves. "I think that's where his perspective was able to change the game and take us a step further," Tony explains. "He was able to turn estate restoration into a routine process."

His perspective has benefited more than our restoration process: Adam's seemingly endless fount of knowledge and exceptional taste has shaped our understanding of the craft. Adam has routinely conducted quality-control classes for Merchandizing and others at the company. "They were somewhat legendary for their wealth of information and colorful style," says Joshua Burgess, Vice President of Manufacturing, who started at Smokingpipes as Sales Manager. "I was a pipe smoker and enthusiast but what I didn't know could have filled a book. I remember when the first batch of Jess Chonowitsch pipes came in during my time with Smokingpipes. Adam and Sykes sat down with me to talk about them and explain to me why they were special. Adam taught me a great deal during my early days, and he still teaches me a lot now."

When Josh became the General Manager for Smokingpipes in 2014, he and Adam worked even more closely. Once Josh moved to Ireland to begin working at Peterson, Adam was one of the people he knew he'd miss seeing daily. However, there were still opportunities for them to collaborate and share ideas about design and manufacturing, culminating in Adam joining Josh on a trip to Peterson in Dublin in 2021 after several months of developing new stains and a new process for staining at the factory.

Josh remembers his time working with Adam fondly: "It was great fun working with Adam and a special treat to watch him interact and teach the guys in the factory. When it came time to test the new bowl coating he had developed, he took one of the pumpkins from the office and covered it with the coating. His thinking was sound: If a bowl's coating will adhere to a pumpkin, it will adhere to a pipe."

Today, Adam also assists Shane Ireland, Vice President of Retail, with technical questions when Shane is evaluating an estate batch himself: "This is true for everybody in the company," says Shane, "but if any of us are working on an estate batch and we are unsure about a judgement call or a piece of information that we need, Adam is absolutely everybody's first call and go-to person." Shane became Adam's direct manager around 2017 and managed him until around last year. The two still work very closely, discussing the overall health of our estate inventory and big-picture topics at Smokingpipes.

"We often solicit advice from Adam," says Shane. "For marketing, for example, whether it's an angle or a way to phrase something to increase engagement, he is a valuable resource. He's done a lot to advise me and my team over the years." Josh elaborates on Shane's point: "I think that's one of the things easily overlooked about Adam; His importance to the company extends well beyond estate evaluations and restoration."

Shane doesn't mince words when it comes to Adam's pipe knowledge: "Maybe nobody in this business knows more about pipes than Adam. I can certainly say that nobody in the world has evaluated or handled more estate pipes than Adam. So many people look to Smokingpipes for current market value and Adam is the one who has been making those calls for nearly two decades." Over Adam's tenure, tens of thousands of pipes have passed through his hands.

Steve Mawby, Director of Sales, explains Adam's role involvement in that process: "He has to make the call of which pipes can be refurbished and which we cannot buy, for whatever reason." Adam also came up with the idea years ago to keep photos of old pipe listings from artisan pipe makers on-site, even after they are sold, so their work can still be showcased.

The estates department has grown over the years, and the number of pipes coming in has increased. But Adam still loves to dive into the details. "Whether that's pipe making, quality control, unused pipes, or figuring out when a pipe was made," says Sykes, "it all feeds his particular brand of eccentricity. People are sending us old and broken pipes and we need to establish that they're not really broken. That requires a level of meticulousness and it's a rare skill. We've trained others to do it but he does it better than anyone. He definitely does it better than me."

Adam's knowledge and expertise extends far beyond estates. "He's such a value to this company," says Chris Panos, a Customer Service Representative. "He has taught me so much. I interact with him often about pipes, and his knowledge is unbelievable." We wouldn't be the same company or who we are today if it wasn't for Adam being so deeply ingrained in so many of the things that we do here at Smokingpipes.

Adam continues to share his time and knowledge with those around him. John McElheny, Copywriter-turned-Pipe Specialist, has been working directly under Adam since September of 2024. "He evaluates thousands of pipes a year, as well as fixes many otherwise unsellable pipes, and helped to build our estates department," says John. "His foresight is excellent, which lets him catch mistakes before they get pushed through." Under Adam's guidance, each pipe affords John an opportunity to gain insight into the history of brands, pipe lines, finishes, and styles. "Adam has been instrumental in my progression. He's been guiding me along nearly every step of the way by both teaching me and checking my work. I've learned an incredible amount in my time with him, and it's a rare day that I show up and don't learn something new."

The first time John watched Adam bend a stem really stuck with him. "It might sound somewhat uneventful, but the ease with which he did it was stunning." During the process, Adam took a straight vulcanite stem from a pipe that had been rejected and brought John back to the restoration room. "He explained how those stems were bent, using a judicious application of heat, looked over the stem thoroughly, and started heating it. He held the stem over a heat gun, all the while talking to me about his experiences bending stems, ways one had to be careful about it, and how different materials require different methods before removing the stem from the heat."

Much to John's surprise, the process was not gradual. "Once he took the stem off the heat, he immediately bent and pressed it into shape, holding it there and continuing to speak until it cooled. When he held the pipe back up, the stem was poised in a perfect little arc." John was astounded by his tactful skill. "The immediacy and the swiftness with which he was able to achieve something I'd never even seen done before has stayed with me. Adam truly understands the importance of being exact." That same detail-oriented, idealistic perspective, and disciplined work ethic have also shaped Adam's own artisanal pipe making.

Adam the Artisan Pipe Maker

Adam started hand-making pipes personally in late 2006 but didn't fully jump into the craft until the Chicago Pipe Show in 2008. "For many years I didn't know what people thought of me or my pipes," says Adam, "though I've been more comfortable with myself and my pipes in recent years." His skill was commemorated when he earned the Chicago Pipe Show's Master of Pipes award in 2019. The award honored his accomplishments through his work as a carver and his involvement in estate pipe evaluation and refurbishments.

Hiroyuki Tokutomi, Adam Davidson, & Jeff Gracik

Early on in his pipe making, Adam interacted with pipe makers who came to visit and work in his shop. In 2009, Jeff Gracik and Hiroyuki Tokutomi spent a day in his shop, and the pair visited again the following year. In 2014, Adam returned the favor, visiting Gracik in California and Tokutomi and Kei-ichi Gotoh in Japan for a couple days. He shaped pipes alongside each of them, but mostly he loved observing their pipe-making processes.

Moreover, Adam has had a monumental impact on the wider pipe community, and especially on his fellow pipe makers. Adam's seemingly limitless creativity and exacting brilliance continue to inspire his peers. "They respect and admire his ability to innovate in this space," says Shane. "Some of the wildest and most memorable innovations in pipe making that we've seen in the last two decades have come from Adam."

"Adam's one of the best pipe makers in the United States," Sykes reaffirms, "and in terms of pipe making artisanally, he's certainly the company's expert. Not only does he have a bunch of esoteric pipe knowledge in his head, he's also the company's resident pipe maker."

Adam's combination of natural talent, eye for detail, exacting standards, and creative momentum affords him a uniquely holistic perspective, one that prioritizes the industry and hobby. "He's an internal person with a vendor's perspective, a pipe-maker's perspective, and a restorer's perspective," says Tony. "He sought out the right people and he carved a niche into the industry for himself. He's the pipe maker's pipe maker."

Adam continues to craft a few dozen pipes a year in smooth and sandblasted finishes from select blocks. His shape inspirations range from early English classics to retro Danish Freehands, but all are recognizably Adam Davidson designs. From his work with sandblasted bamboo and resin to his range of signature shapes like the Lorraine, Almond, and Figu, Adam continues to fearlessly pursue innovation; Each pipe is an opportunity to test his skill, to learn a new technique, and to raise the bar another rung higher.

Adam's Overall Impact

Beyond his expertise in estate restoration and artisanal pipe making, Adam is also a fascinating person in his own right. He has been described in many ways — from eccentric, interesting, innovative, unfailingly honest, and reliable, to thorough, detail-oriented, funny, and, perhaps more than anything, brilliant. Shane underlines that incredible range: "I don't know anyone who has more hidden talents than Adam." He isn't merely a jack-of-all-trades; Adam is a multi-disciplined craftsman whose passion continues to inspire and energize all those around him.

That energy resonated strongly with Steve the first time he visited Adam's home workshop: "Seeing the pipes he was creating was a really standout experience for me," says Steve. "If I had to pick one thing that is the best about Adam, it's his creativity. He's incapable of a mundane, ordinary thought. His brain's just endlessly creative."

Adam has also played an important role in many of our own company traditions, particularly due to his exceptional cooking skills, preparing meats and food for company parties and potlucks. "I was amazed back then about his skills in the kitchen," recalls Tony. "He's a multi-talented individual with an extremely creative mind, which I think benefits him as a pipe maker as well." Adam also creates his own leather pipe bags and other craft-leather goods. "It's unique," says Tony, "and it shows his attention to detail, craftsmanship, and the fact he likes to put himself into all the aspects of his work. He's thinking about all of it, down to the quality of the leather."

Not only does Adam enjoy cooking and hosting others, he is also eager to share his many passions and kindness with others. "Adam is one of the most generous people that I've ever met," says Shane. "I've seen that manifest in a variety of ways, and it's not something that you come across all that often. Whether in pipe making or cooking, when you spend time with Adam, you learn a lot and you have a lot of fun, no matter what the topic of conversation is. He's a very good friend who I'm honored to know."

It's impossible to quantify just how much Smokingpipes has benefited from Adam's tenure. "If I could make up any title for Adam," says Josh, "it would be 'Pipe Sage.' There is much to say and celebrate about Adam: His love of food, his sense of humor, and his intelligence. But Adam's defining trait is his commitment to excellence — in his own work as a pipe maker and as a Laudisian."

Truly, we wouldn't be who we are if it wasn't for Adam being so deeply ingrained in so many of the things we do. Shane knows that Adam's perspective is invaluable: "The perspective that he gives us from a pipe maker and consumer's perspective; his taste for what is good in terms of design language in general; his instincts; and his creativity are all things that I will always admire and be jealous of, frankly. His contributions to pipe making and to Smokingpipes are immeasurable."

In 20-years time, a lot has changed in our industry, but Adam still remembers the early days of Smokingpipes fondly. "Smokingpipes was the biggest little online pipe-and-tobacco retailer and I thought we were really cool," says Adam. "There are a lot of pipe makers and tobaccos blends that are no longer around, but there are new and exciting makers and tobaccos every year." In the future, Adam has high hopes for our potential to succeed.

Adam is a man of many talents. His brilliance is exemplified in more ways than one, and his impact on Smokingpipes has left a lasting impression on the industry as a whole. It's an incredible honor to call him a colleague. Please join us in congratulating Adam Davidson for 20 years of creativity and success.

This was such an inspirational read and sincere tribute. Nice work, Kayla! I read it while smoking one of my estate pipes from SmokingPipes, so it was interesting to learn some of the backstory on how that department came to be. Congratulation on the milestone, Adam! I always find it inspiring to read about people who find a passion early in life and pursue it with such vigor and passion. You sound like an incredibly talented person and, quite honestly, I can understand Shane’s comment about being jealous.

Heart felt congratulations to Adam! It's hard to believe that so many years have passed so quickly, and it's been an true honor to know him through most of them. His creativity has always been a source of inspiration, and our conversations have been formative in my own appreciation and understanding of design details in both modern and classic pipes.
