BriarWorks' Magnetic Calabash Review

Already very popular, the BriarWorks' Signature Series Calabash (designed by Todd Johnson) is nothing short of an innovation in American pipe production. A handmade, all-briar, fully-functional Calabash was the goal, and although they accomplished just that, the BriarWorks team just wasn't satisfied. Taking it a step further, they decided that it would be much more fun, and functional, if the bowls themselves were modular.

With the use of magnets, they were able to tweak the design to accommodate interchangeable bowls for those of us who like to experiment with aesthetic, while offering the ability to dedicate specific bowls to one type of tobacco, or a single blend — all using the same pipe.

I've been enjoying mine for some time now and wanted to demonstrate just how easy it is to customize and add bowls to one of these fine pipes. With one pipe, and a few extra bowls, you can even have an entire rotation with you, when space is at a premium.

Gentleman they may be similar to a calabash in shape but that's were it ends. A calabash is made from a gourd and meerschaum. Again shapes are similar but briar has nothing to do with a calabash with e exception of maybe a futile.

A reverse calabash obviously isn't made of gourd and meer "reversed" either(well sort of). It's shaped like a calabash and may function like a calabash.I'll take is as a calabash.

Technically Bill, what you are describing is called a gourd calabash. For years now there has been a briar pipe shape just called a calabash without the removable bowl that is reminiscent of the gourd calabash's shape. In fact, even some of the meerschaum brands make a removable meer bowled calabash with a gourd shaped wooden body made from various woods such as mahogany. This site even had a Go-Tang collaboration removable bowl calabash made with a pretty exotic material, mammoth ivory, and briar, with no gourd or meerschaum. This BriarWorks one is a clever design regardless of what it's called, but to look at it without being told it is one, I'd have called it a calabash.
