How To Select A Cigar Humidor

Today Alan Britt and I want to give you some advice on how to select a cigar humidor, whether it's a gift for yourself or for a loved one. There are a plethora of brands who make humidors and it can be a little intimidating, so we hope this guide can help you select the perfect one for you.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

[Alan Britt]: Yeah, absolutely. There are different price points and styles to dive into.

[Tyler Caldwell]: To me, there are four points that should always be addressed when picking out a humidor: One is to look into the functionality of it, making sure it is going to seal properly. Number two, is it aesthetically pleasing for you? Three, is it in the budget that you're looking to spend? And four is to remember that it's not a big deal. As long as it's something that you like, or something that you know your loved one is going to enjoy, it's not worth stressing over.

A Simple Travel Humidor

[AB]: Right, I think a lot of us started with something as simple as a Tupperware as a make-shift humidor. I know I did when I didn't have a ton of cigars or cigar space. I probably never kept more than 10 to 20 cigars at a time. I kept it in a simple Tupperware that you can get from anywhere with a Boveda pack.

When I upgraded from my Tupperware, the first humidor I got was a simple travel one. The Xikar 10-Cigar Travel humidor is a great example from a super reputable brand. They have some of the best cutters and lighters on the market.

A travel humidor is awesome because you can take it wherever you go. When I started joining these guys at our brick-and-mortar, Low Country Pipe and Cigar, I brought this bad boy with me everywhere, smoked the cigars from there, replaced them, all while supporting my local brick-and-mortar store. It gets the job done at a really reasonable price point.

[TC]: I'm glad you brought up the Tupperware because when you're getting into cigars, not everyone can justify getting a humidor yet. But this is a great travel case from Xikar to take a few cigars with you. It's very durable. It's pretty inexpensive for what you get out of it but I actually like to call these advanced "Tupidors."

Consider the Size

[TC]: The next piece of advice that I've always told people is, when you're looking for a humidor, look into the sizing of 'em. There's small, medium, and large humidors. Different companies call them different things, but you'll often find things that'll say 25-count, 50-count, and so forth. So the advice I always give to people is, if you are in the market for a 25-count humidor, let's say, you might want to think about sizing up. It's a blessing and a curse with cigars. Once you get the humidor filled up, you're either gonna have to smoke more to make room or you're gonna have to come and buy a larger humidor.

I always recommend sizing up if you are in the market for a humidor. Depending on how often you smoke and how many you want to store at once, it's always a plus to have more room. Also, there's a chance of people getting you cigars as gifts when they find out that you're into this hobby. With a bigger humidor, you'll have room to grow into it.

[AB]: Right. Once you start nerding out on cigars, you jump from that 10-count up to something larger really fast, unless you're like Tyler who smokes 15 cigars a day and smokes 'em faster than he buys 'em.

[TC]: I don't even need a humidor 'cause I smoke 'em all before it's even filled anyway.

[AB]: I'm on the opposite end of that spectrum. I smoke maybe two cigars a day but buy boxes a week, so I store far more than I smoke.

[TC]: If you are a box buyer, your average box is gonna be 20 cigars. If you have a 25-count humidor, that one box is going to fill it up on its own.

Another piece of advice that I always like to tell people is, when you see something that says 25-count, 50-count, what have you, what a lot of people don't know is that your average humidor is based on how many Toros it can hold. The Toro size is typically about 6" x 52. It is the number-one sold vitola, at least in the United States, and a lot of humidors are designed to hold that particular size.

Consider the size you like to smoke. If you're a Petit Corona guy, you're probably gonna hold more than 25. If you're a Churchill smoker, you're probably gonna hold less than 25. That's another reason why you should do a little research on what kind of humidor you want to get.

[AB]: I think for the average cigar consumer, the statistics show that they smoke one cigar a week, so a 10-count, 25-count is probably gonna be just fine. We are not the average consumers.

Larger and Aesthetically Pleasing Humidors

[AB]: For most people, the next step is something like the Savoy Zebrawood Medium humidor. These are very well priced and very well made. If you have a larger budget, you can get something extravagant like this Colibri Quasar Desktop humidor. This is phenomenal. I've been considering buying one of these for my desk for some time. They have really cool matching accessories, like a cutter, a table lighter, and more.

[TC]: I have a background in art and I love the whole geometric design on the Quasar humidor. It's very artistic and aesthetically pleasing to my eye. Like I said, when you're buying a humidor, make sure it's just something that you like looking at.

[AB]: As we said, it's such a personal preference. It can be intimidating. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our customer service. They're fantastic. I manage 'em, so ask for me. Solid advice! From my experience, once you figure out what size humidor you want/need get a bigger humidor because you will be buying more cigars than you anticipated.

Seems like smokingpipes is turning into smokingcigars. Just an observation.
