The Types, Uses, and Essential Nature of the Humble Tobacco Pouch

Discover the very best tobacco pouches available and their types and specific uses

W

hile we tend to emphasize the maintenance and preservation of our favorite pipes, we spend less time discussing how to safeguard our tobacco, especially when traveling or on the go. After all, without tobacco, pipes are nothing more than ornate briar sculptures – charming, handsome, but, inevitably, purely aesthetic. When we talk about traveling with tobacco, we're often discussing two similar but distinctive methods: a pipe bag or a tobacco pouch. Most pipe bags offer a pouch to store tobacco, but individual tobacco pouches are specifically designed to accommodate tobacco.

Broadly speaking, there are four main categories of tobacco pouches — Stand Up, Roll Up, Zipper, and Button. Each is useful in different ways, depending on a given smoker's preference, but generally, these pouches are defined by the way they are secured, with some rolled up, some zippered, some buttoned, and others, well, any combination of the above, but with the added benefit of standing.

But what tobacco pouch best suits your needs? Do you need a pouch that rolls up for easy pocket-carry? Or a pouch that can stand on its own for easier chamber loading? What about the pouch's materials? To help navigate some of these difficult decisions, let's take a look at some of the pouches we offer at Smokingpipes.

1790 English Tobacco Boxes

1790 English Tobacco Boxes

English Tobacco Boxes take inspiration from the tobacco boxes that were fashioned in the late 1700s and stocked in the trading posts of the time. Hand-soldered, with no lead-bearing solder used, these boxes are crafted from three distinctive materials, brass, copper, and German silver – a type of hard-wearing, high nickel-content brass. In addition to being simplistically stylish, these tins are also durable and compact, making them an attractive choice to carry your tobacco.

Government regulations require that any metal container not treated with a food-grade coating carry a warning sticker by the manufacturer, which these tins do have. The materials used in these won't actually affect your tobacco; however, tobacco's slight acidity will affect the metal, encouraging it to develop a patina of darker color (think antique brass). While some prefer that look, if you wish to keep the metal brighter, placing the tobacco in a small plastic bag or treating the inside of the tin with a thin coat of carnauba (or similar, food-safe wax) is advised.

Then there's the "BaccyFlap." Originally made of plastic (Bakelite), it was a saucer shape about palm size which is screwed together. Anthony Harris of early reverse gourd shaping fame made a briar BaccyFlap for me and a friend. It's convenient in the pocket and fun to unscrew. He recommends coating the inside with food grade paraffin sealing wax and the outside with carnauba wax.

I would like to find a replacement latex tobacco pouch. Mine has Made in England on it and it is yellow latex with no faux leather or other material on it. Very simple and very good.
