About This Pipe
The beautifully layered ring grain banding the bowl of this Costello Old Antiquari should come as no surprise; only straight-grained briar is used to make pipes int his finish, after all. Nonetheless, the loveliness is so evident that I'd be remiss not to point it out. (And how's that for a paradox?) The shape itself is very stout, bordering on a pot, with a stem which tapers very neatly from a thick, but smooth transition to the flattened bit. The crowning touch, the plateau which constitutes the rim, blends perfectly into the composition as a whole.
