Portrait Coffee was founded in 2019 in Atlanta's Historic West End, and the name states the intent plainly: "Our name comes from a desire to change the picture that comes to mind when folks think of specialty coffee." Coffee was first discovered in Africa, and Aaron Fender, John Onwuchekwa, Marcus Hollinger, and Khalid Smith built Portrait around putting those faces back into the story — an invitation, printed on every bag, to join them in pouring a new narrative. The year-round blends are named first-name-only for Black figures in American cultural and civic life (TONI for Toni Morrison, BARRY for Barry Jenkins, STACEY for Stacey Abrams) while the single origins are named for the country and the grower who produced them. Everything is roasted to order in Atlanta, and the seasonal lots rotate through the year, so check back often.
