I like to grade blends on their own rather than comparing them against another. When I am looking for a lighter blend of Balkan, this is where I go. This blend is so smooth and pleasing. It satisfies my taste buds on so many levels without being overwhelming. You may not agree with the "5" rating, but on those occasions when I'm looking for something lighter, with a complex flavor, this is the obvious choice. Smooth, creamy, much better than expected. Similar to Rattray’s Red Rapparee, little less strength and body. Not having the cavendish maybe. Really like it. Hard to smoke just one bowl. Recommended…

Nice surprise. Mellow, but tasty. Good latakia blend, but the other tobaccos in it shine through the latakia. Still smokey, but well balanced and with a pleasant room note, and it lasts a long time. Could go very well mixed with Fr. Dempsey

I have returned to pipe smoking after a number of decades. I tried, literally, over 20 English and Balkan blends in the hopes of finding one, or close to it, that I smoked in the 60's and 70's. Of course, taste is entirely subjective, however, to my taste buds and olfaction, this is the first one have tried that is reminiscent of that blend, and perhaps better. There are differing views of what constitutes an English vs a Balkan mixture. For me, if it leads with Turkish it is a Balkan blend. Sutliff Balkan II has four premier Turkish tobaccos that give it a wonderful toasted, nutty flavor, with just enough matured Virginia for mild sweetness and just enough Latakia to provide a light smoky flavor.
