About This Pipe Tobacco

Taking inspiration from the popular, Lovecraftian The Old Ones series, Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch: From Beyond is a rich, potent, and incredibly complex English mixture that captures Head Blender Jeremy Reeves' impression of a wonderfully aged, 1990s-era tin of Dunhill Nightcap. Balancing full flavor with robust strength, it's handcrafted using a host of rare tobacco varietals: Eastern NC Red Virginias (2017), Bright Canadian Virginias (2022), Thai Izmir (2019), Turkish Latakia, Greek Basma (2022), and heirloom Cyprian Latakia (2004). The flavor is dark, rich, and subtly sweet with an smoky, incense-like quality evocative of shadows in the woods.

I recently opened a tin of Cornell & Diehl’s From Beyond. This was the 2023 Small Batch release, and it has aged beautifully. The Latakia is rich, smoky, and leathery without becoming overpowering, while the Orientals bring a dry, woody character and the Virginias add just enough natural sweetness to keep everything balanced. This is everything I want in an English blend, deep, savory, and complex. I’m very glad that I got a couple of jars of this wonderful tobacco. In my opinion, the tobacco is simply excellent, and that’s even though I’m not the biggest fan of English blends. The tobacco is very aromatic, sweet from start to finish, and it burns cool. The only downsides are that it’s hard for me to get hold of and the jar gets smoked quickly....Read More

I have always been an aromatic smoker but the artwork and the fact that im a complete sucker for anything that says small batch made me purchase a tin. I instantly fell in love and not only that but now have ventured deep into English blends in all there splendor thanks to this magnificent work of art. The smokiness is most prominent with a hint of sweetness and spice and layers of dark fruit hidden throughout. A Reconsideration [Still, Stop Deleting Reviews]

I had rated the 2021 release poorly due to the perception of fruity additives, complaining about berry-like or apple casings. I believe that was incorrect. What I now believe to be the case is that what I was perceiving is owed to the preservative antimicrobial agents Smokingpipes uses (common food additives such as potassium sorbate, sodium- or potassium-benzoate, and combinations thereof, plus a carrier such as propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin) interacting with fermentation products. Aromatic volatiles such as esters and aldehydes – those molecules and compounds producing all the characteristics we seek in well aged tobaccos – combining with preservatives are known to produce organoleptic effects comparable to "smelling fruity aromas" and even "flavors". Thus I retract my previous assessments of Jeremy's heavyhandedness in applying casings of the fruitier varieties. The people at Smokingpipes know all this, or at least their chemists do, which is probably why they always delete my reviews alleging fruity casings and toppings where they may not indeed be present at all. They usually allow them to stay on the site once I draw attention to review-deleting, however, I would appreciate an email from Smokingpipes explaining the possibility of my error and offering alternative explanations rather than simply deleting my reviews. Maybe I should appreciate that a corporation out for maximum profit is not the same kind of intellectual environment as one can expect from a university department or scholarly convention or even a pipe forum. Point well taken. I also understand that antimicrobial applications are often proprietary secrets and not open for discussing with customers, even very loyal ones. This is also a very good point. But then again, isn't Smokingpipes always going on about the virtues of Hobby and Community? I wonder, would it have been that inconvenient or profit-killing to reach out to a fellow hobbyist and community member to share information and build knowledge? My instinct is that it would not. It would be rather easy. And yet that has never been the Laudisi way. This pattern is one I have observed for over five years. I've smoked pipes for over twenty years but have patronized Smokingpipes for about six. I wonder how much more loyal a customer base they would have if they practiced the virtues they package and sell as commodities. Perhaps we've collectively made it too easy for them and they can reliably depend on all of us to "Consume Product and then get excited to consume Next Product," (memes, anyone?) Well, now I've gone and lived up to my handle, being all pretentious and pedantic. We'll call it here. TLDR: 2021 From Beyond is excellent. The older the better. If you still have tins of this squirreled away, be patient. I think they will only improve the longer you wait. The 2025 release is not very much to my liking, incredibly different to 2021, but I suspect this is likely because it is still too young to be any good. I still smell the apple notes that don't belong in an English blend, but I now attribute these to volatile fermentation product and the preservative gunk rather than hijinks in the blending room.
