Man! This stuff is strong and complex. Very interesting! The Latakia is different. There's no leathery quality. Almost all "woodsy" to my palate. The oritentals are sour with slight sweetness from the Virginias (I assume). The whole interplay is woods/sour/spice/sweet, in that order to me. This one will take me some time to get used to. Tangy creamy and not an overwhelming smoke bomb, as typically found with Cyprian Latakia. The Latakia is soft and the Orientals are gentle, two flavorfully assertive leaves which are always difficult to balance and always battle in profile for center stage in modern mixtures. This is harmonious. Those Orientals are something I've not tasted in a long time; a soft, buttery, complex and herbaceous minty character harkens to the 1990's when varietal sun cured were plentiful. Cyprian Latakia has a very strong, cedar, sooty and inconsistent flavor, while this has much smoother - less assertive campfire note with an underlying sweetness. The cedar is still there, but it's balanced by other herbs and doesn't overwhelm the flavor profile. This Latakia falls somewhere between Syrian and Cyprian. This is a perfect English blend with a taste of winter and the woods, I cannot remember the last time a simple English blend has left such an impression on me. I believe the addition of the Burley is what truly makes this blend stand out. The earthy and strong burley mixed with the sour Orientals and the spice of the latakia is simply a magical combination, and let's not forget the Perique with complements the latakia with it's own unique spice. From beyond is Far Out! Smoked in Rossi Antico 8316 and a couple of Savinelli 316 KS's. I love complex blends in those bent pots. Also, I enjoyed "From Beyond" the most when dried to nearly a crisp. All of the great flavors shine then, and sipping a bowl has no ill affects. Just delicately keep the ember atop the fresh tobacco and your good to go. My Stars given is: 4=really good and want some around to smoke from time to time. And 5=so very good, I want to have it daily. So I give it 4.5 for it being a Small Batch run; and for that reason, I know I have to be stingy with it. If I could have unlimited access to it...it would easily be a 5-Star. But know this is all relative to me having many more English Blends left yet to try; and for only having started piping just under two months ago. Hands down the best english blend I have ever tasted. The Turkish Latakia is sweet and floral, unlike any Cyprian latakia I've ever tasted. It is rather sweet and settle than a "bomb"to your palate like the usual latakia blends. This blend is what Latakia, in my head, should taste like. Sweet, settle, and blends in with the other components rather than be its own star at all times. combined with the orientals, it feels more balanced, and some would call it a straight up balkan blend. I can see that. My suspicions would be that the Latakia is atypically sweet and floral, it really compliments the orientals rather than shun it to a supporting role. The perique adds plums and spice to the floral and sweet blend, and the addition of burley really undertones the whole experience with nutty flavors. The red Virginia's wraps the whole blend into this beautiful, dark, sweet, fruity, spicy, and very floral woodsy blend. I hope Turkish Latakia becomes the next big thing, or at the very least, we can see more of it in small batch blends seasonally....Read More
