About This Pipe Tobacco

A quality English blend from renowned G.L. Pease, Spark Plug's tin art immediately denotes its inspiration: A Union Jack comprises the foreground in recognition of the English blends that dominated British pipesmoking preferences in the early 20th century. These original mixtures offered a distinctly spicy and smoky component though the use of Latakia and Oriental tobaccos overtop a Virginia base. As such, Spark Plug is an immediately Latakia-forward blend that Pease describes as

"Rich, dark, oily, mysterious, full of fascinatingly complex, smoky, and leathery aromas, just like all those little British cars from my past that inspired both the blend and the name. Latakiaphiles are going to love it."

Pressed into a dense plug, Spark Plug can be sliced thick or thin, based on individual preference, and it presents a deep, powerful flavor profile, marked by a campfire's smokiness and aged leather from the Cyprian Latakia, married to rich and spicy Orientals from Greece and Turkey, and sweet Bright and Red Virginias. Like the classic cars that inspired its invention, Spark Plug is charming and satisfying. Take it for a test drive before setting aside to age or enjoy it at full throttle straight out of the tin.

I feel like those without the knife, some know-how, and time to prepare a plug for smoking would be best served sticking with the more basic formats. It's simply not fair to lower your rating due to poor preparation. This blend really seems to shine, as a few others have mentioned: sliced to your desired thickness, cubed well, and rubbed/packed to your final density preference. I truly "dig" cutting the plug, even though I've got much less experience than most others in my local club and hang. All that said, learn to smoke a plug...some of the blends offered as such are not to be missed in your lifetime-this is certainly one of them!

I was greeted with the lovely, balanced latakia that most of us (some of us that deeply covet the stuff) look for in an English or Balkan. It didn't take long at all before I knew this tobacco was truly going to sing in the somewhat shallower, more beamy chambers such as bulldogs, Dublin's, certain diplomats, and the like. Put to a vintage near-inch pipe, or even something like a contemporary 316...it will smoke itself in such broad bowls.

The incense and saddle leather are pure magic, and play against and contrast with the mildly, almost semi-sweet note that pops up on occasion, but does not distract from the ride. I was reminded of motorcycle journeys and plane engines over tarmac, as you can giddily experience the thrumming of motors and the smell of burning engine oil as the flavors and scents twist around you.

I'll be igniting this spark plug again and again, as it's a ride both thrilling and beautiful!

This is a fantastic English plug. I am also a fan of the Gaslight. The little extra work and effort to prepare is always worth it.

This may be my new favorite English blend. It’s like reading an old leather-bound book in an oak library. Easy to cut into thin flakes that I fold and stuff into the pipe. Burns well once you get it going.
Dark, Rich Leather and Creosote

Product: G. L. Pease Spark Plug 2oz
As per usual with GL Pease/C&D/Drucquer, it does not impress me right out of the tin. It's sort of a one-note wonder, with latakia drowning out everything else. I love latakia more than most people I know, but I like to taste my orientals and virginias too. I'll leave this one jarred in the cellar for two or three months and then it will probably be excellent. That's usually how it works. For now, it's dark, rich, leathery, full of pine smoke and creosote. It's definitely not a "plug" but rather a mush. The leaves are far too wet and soft to be a plug, far too wet and soft to slice into flakes, so it needs to be set out to dry for an hour or more, then rubbed out thoroughly. Spark Plug is a slow smoke, remarkably cool, not as flavorful as I expected, but pretty okay. The tin I opened today is three and a half years old, right where I like it. Now all it needs is a few months in the jar to "breathe" and I'm sure it will be delectable. I will re-evaluate at that time. Cheers....Read More
