Gawith Hoggarth & Co.: Brown Bogie Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 005-001-0004

This Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. dark fired and dark air cured Twist is also known as Happy Bogie. This brown twist is actually a bit stronger than the black twist and is made to slice into coins for smoking, or small plugs for chewing - as done by many sailors.

That leathery, room-filling aroma melts my heart every time - that's even before I've cut it up. It takes some practice and lots of patience to prep Brown Bogie yourself and still get a good smoke, but the longevity of the rope over coins and ready-rubbed is remarkable. The Brown Irish X is smoother, but the Bogie has more kick. The smoke tastes like peppery oil and grassy musk, bawdy chalk, soap and tangy citrus as it coats your mouth and explodes through your sinuses, burning like sweet country fire the whole way and making your head spin like mad. It's a proper throat-punch at any rate. So glad to see it back!...Read More
Could be a great conversation starter at parties?

Well, well, well. Rope-style tobacco. Sounds fancy, right? Wrong. Sure, the taste is decent—but maybe I'm just bitter because I foolishly thought this rope nonsense would be easy—slice it, light it, smoke it, right? Ha! Joke's on me. I sliced off cute little pieces, treated it like a precious tobacco plug, and guess what? Still wouldn't stay lit. I'm convinced even Elon Musk's flamethrower wouldn't do the trick. Oh, and pro tip: rub this stuff out in your hands if you enjoy having your palms stained for days. Great conversation starter at parties. Anyway, props to you brave five-star reviewers—you must have patience, determination, and possibly magical fire-starting abilities that I clearly lack. Will I toss it? Nah, can't bring myself to chuck it after shelling out half my paycheck. Instead, I'll lovingly place it out in the yard where my dog does her business—maybe it'll learn something about humility and become smokeable someday. Until then, hard pass for me :)...Read More

I never can tell what I’ll get with GH so I always try 1oz to start. This one is one of their best and most flavorful blends. It’s not the same as the brown twist but just as good only different. It’s a stout smoke with lots of earthy flavors and lots of pepper, which I like. It’s pure and very enjoyable. Buying more...Read More

Wasn't for me. A tasteless blend, almost impossible to keep lit and clogs up my pipe. It does have nicotine but I'll take dark Birdseye as an easy way to get my fix.

The other reviewers go into details about the product's characteristics, so I'll let you read them for more details. The first bowl I smoked of this rope, I found myself thinking one thought, over and over: "This is an exquisite smoking experience." Subsequent bowls have felt similar to that first bowl, as it is an extraordinarily delicious tobacco with a good potency and pleasant mouthfeel; with very little to no bite. I can see why this rope has such a legendary reputation....Read More
Extremely Over Priced

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Brown Bogie Bulk
Needs ample dry time. Coined, cubed, and gravity filled. The texture of the smoke is greatly satisfying but the flavor is virtually nonexistent and requires a ridiculous amount of relights. The taste does not warrant more than 2 dots much less the 5 listed from the website. Strength is not a 5 either, Mac Baren ODF is listed as a 4 and it has more of a nicotine hit than Brown Bogie. I'm curious if the company has put out substandard product to meet demand as there was a "notify me" list due to being sold out. You really have to be a die hard fan to praise this. Its Ok and certainly not value for money. I doubt the product I received is truly what Humphry was so impressed by....Read More

Package note of barbecue, earth and mild ripe fruit. The wet 1/2-inch-thick rope is brown and darker brown and needs slicing into thin coins (with a razor or thin sharp knife) and rubbed out to get the fastest drying time. Burn is slow and requires numerous relights. The strength is very strong and nic is strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is full and consistent, with notes earthy spicy cigar, wood, leather, slightly sweet, wisps of coco powder and floral. Dark fired leaves leading more Dark fired leaves supported by dark air cured leaf, if I didn't read the "contents" above, I'd say burley was the lead component. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is good....Read More

I bought a pound or so of this rope back in 2016. I immediately put it into a tall mason jar and into an old steamer trunk for a long rest. This is Autumn 2022 and I’m not enjoying this fine tobacco. It still has the nic punch! I cut it with a cigar lance, rubbed it out and loaded into my Northern Briar Canadian. Flavor is smoky and mellow. Taste is bold and pleasing. Mellow but heavy. It’s good if that’s your thing. Be careful with this one,it could knock your senses back to the sailing days....Read More
