Kendal Flake is a stronger tobacco with light side proportions of 68% Virginia and a dark side of nearly 1/3, including 16% dark-cured Indian leaf, provide a medium strength smoke. The unique, complex top note is achieved by the combination of over 10 different flavors, essences, and extracts from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.
I opened a jar of Kendall Flake from 2005 this morning and loaded my pipe. There was much of a scent left on the leaf but dark aged tobacco aroma. The moisture level was excellent. I rubbed out a bowl full, loaded, and lit. The first few minutes ... Read Morewere chaotic before the flavor settled. There wasn't as much topping flavor as fresh, but the natural sweetness of the Virginias had really increased. Once I was into 2/3 of the bowl it was smooth and sweet. Not the slightest bite no matter how hard the puffs. The smoke was creamy and full. I don't think anymore time would make any more changes to the leaf. I'd say it at the tipping point for the tobacco and needs to be smoked to get the full enjoyment. The Ennerdale I have of the same age still has the aroma of the topping. Read Less

I love GH flakes. Especially those which are in bulk. They're thick, beautiful, and rich and they have a very nice mouth-feel when smoked. It's a mixture of some relatively strong tobaccos, but, to me, it never really overpowers in Vitamin N. This one, to my taste, seems to have more of the floral scents than the others and less of the vanilla/licorice/tonquin flavors of, say, Ennerdale(which I also like). Personally, I refer GH to SG when it comes to tobaccos. SG tobaccos always come too wet to smoke and they really have seemed to be mediocre experiences. But I digress.
I don't know if this could classify as an all-day tobacco, as it is definitely a bit over-the-top. However, I have to stop myself from smoking this instead of other blends that I have. An impressive flake tobacco, in my opinion. Read Less

A firm-flavored Va/Bur with Lakeland essence as a secondary detail. Sharp Virginia paired with a smooth, creamy Burley. Lakeland tastes are lighter than expected, but present. A great blend if Ennerdale is too much for your palate.
I think DK said it perfectly so I don't have much to say that he didn't already touch on, I just came to express my love. Read Moren Eau De Toilet and shouldn't work on a pipe tobacco but it absolutely does. This is a refreshing smoke and would probably work better in the warmer months but I have no problem smoking it year round. The top dressing adds a high range of notes that dance with the lower notes to give the smoker an amazing range of flavors to focus on and this one surely demands your focus. Could be an all day smoke for sure but I'm one that needs variety throughout the day.

I finally got some of this tobacco and I was ready for a strong blend with a possible “floral” topping.

Flavor is dark and meaty with the topping smoothing any sharp edges while not changing the flavor much. Sort of a floral lift that cleans the palate at the end of a draw.
My order was for bulk and I wonder if that tamed the topping more.
Overall, the flake reminds me of a couple of other blends and is a good example of this style of flake with a welcome smoothness.
