About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Mahogany Flake is a broken flake mixture of the finest Virginias with a vanilla casing, and it's among the pinnacle of Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s production. The blending house is particularly lauded for their flake tobaccos, which are still produced using machinery from the 1790s and with production patents from the late 1800s. Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s only production change in the last 100 years involved transitioning from coal-fired to gas-operated tobacco presses, and their flakes are pressed for nearly a month before being sliced and tinned, personifying traditional pipe tobaccos at their best.

I Should Have Ordered More
September 22, 2025
Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Mahogany Flake 50g
***Update: It's possible that what I'm experiencing as the anise flavor mentioned in my review is actually more akin to a slightly spicy, natural vanilla bean flavor as opposed to the more standard vanilla you might experience with something like Lane's 1Q. Although, there is definitely something about this blend that reminds me of the classic Mixture 79, Stokkebye Sambuca, etc. albeit presented in a higher quality version here. Regardless, I did get my chance to order more and took full advantage.*** The tin description states, "A medium strength broken flake with British character and a touch of vanilla." The tin I received contains full, unbroken flakes. If 'fold & stuff' is your preferred packing method, you're good to go. The flavor I detect is a rich anise that dominates throughout the bowl, becoming incredibly sweet in the second half. I don't find the vanilla at all. I have been searching for a tobacco like this for a long time. Other anise based blends have either been too light on flavor or burn too hot. This one hits the sweet spot, literally. As with many Gawith blends, this will require some drying time. I rub the flake out thoroughly and let it try for about 15 minutes or so. I've been smoking it in a medium size bowl, using not quite a full flake. There is a noticeable nic hit by the end but nothing overwhelming (I'm a nicotine lightweight). Hopefully, it won't be too long before this one shows up again. For me, it's an instant favorite....Read More
Pure Incense..

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Mahogany Flake 50g
I've only tried it once and it felt like smoking incense. It's the only tobacco I've ever thrown in the bin. I guess that there's "a lid for every jar", but this one was absolutely not for me!
