n’t insist on being the whole damn show. I like layers. I like complexity. And above all, I like truly good tobacco.
Anyway, back to Smokehouse.
**The jar note is intoxicating.** Deep, red, funky, tangy, meaty, smoky goodness. If I had to describe it, I’d say it smells like licking Carolina-style BBQ sauce off a piece of smoked meat. I know. Everyone keeps describing this stuff like barbecue. But unfortunately for those of us trying to sound sophisticated, they’re absolutely right.
**The smoke itself is incredibly harmonious.** Seriously. Everything is so beautifully proportioned and melded together that the blending alone deserves an award. It behaves wonderfully in the pipe, too. I didn't dry mine and paid the devastating price of one, maybe two extra relights. Somehow, I survived. Give it 10–20 minutes of drying time if that sort of hardship concerns you.
**The first third tastes remarkably like the jar smells**, which, as we all know, isn't always the case. I got that Carolina BBQ tang from the Virginias and Orientals, hardwood smoke, and just a touch of Latakia. At moments, it reminded me of those incredible caramelized wood sugars you get just above a glowing bed of charcoal.
Hang with me. I'm aware I'm describing tobacco like a brisket.
Once things settle in, you get this wonderful, deep, funky, fermented tang from the red Virginias, accompanied by that savory Oriental spice. There's the faintest touch of sweetness, but not in a sugary way. Think of a really good dry red wine. It can be wonderfully fruit-forward without actually tasting sweet. That's the sort of sweetness I'm talking about.
The Virginias take center stage here, and the dark-fired Kentucky works beautifully alongside them, providing that rich, smoky, almost meaty depth without overpowering anything.
And the Latakia?
The Latakia is like that guy at work who always says hi. Nice guy. You like him. You're glad he's around. But for the life of you, you can never remember his name.
He's there, though. Doing his part.
And that's really the beauty of this blend. Nothing is fighting for attention. Nothing feels out of place. It's layered, complex, deeply flavorful, and somehow manages to make all these very different tobaccos taste like they were always meant to be together.

I was worried the latakia would mask the DFK, but it really doesn't. The flavour here is exactly what I was expecting from Jackknife Plug (but it didn't quite deliver), lovely strong smokey tang and smooth creamy finish. Just what I was looking for.
