Kramer's: English Blend Pipe Tobacco

I'm a big fan of old Father Dempsey. This is a completely different type of smoke. The Cavendish really shines and produces a wonderful thick smoke. A milder blend to be sure, but spicy and full of flavor. The Latakia is nicely blended with the Orientals. Truly a Classic American blend.

I tried this after dinner in a John Bull bull dog pipe. Very pleasant smoke, smooth and light. Tasted the latkia but also the Cavendish, Orientals. It is Friday and I am just home from work. I checked the mailbox and found my tobacco order which made me happy. I ran upstairs and grabbed my 1978 Dunhill pipe and filled it with Kramer’s English Blend and lit it up. I was hoping for a typical English blend with a lot of smokey, woodsy flavor which I could not find with this tobacco. Don’t get me wrong, It is a pleasant smoke but it is a mild blend with a lot of Orientals taste and a hint of Latakia. When I first ordered this back in March 2017 it was something I quite easily passed up; the dry flavors of this blend didn't quite sit right with me. 2 years in a mason jar later and it's an impressive palate cleanser-- as a fairly heavy Virginia smoker I didn't realize how sweet the various blends I was smoking were until lighting a bowl of this on a "keep or clean" binge. It's a dry smoke, not a trace of sweetness with a background sort of soapy flavor (not unpleasant but I'd worry about ghosting were I not smoking out of cobs). The smell of steak is strong after two years with a vague bit of campfire-- I don't get that taste in the pipe while smoking but it's an interesting room note. This is my favorite blend. I have tried hundreds and I find this to be the most outstanding. There is a sour note that I love. I have not found anything else with that note. Overall it is a standard English with that splash of flavor that brings it to the top for me.

I can't express how happy I am that Kramer's is now available to so many more people. I used to have the good fortune of driving across town and picking up a few ounces of Cary, Danny Kaye, Father Dempsey, New Mix Blends, Etc. It is sad that the store is now closed after so many decades of great service to the pipe smoking community. (We miss you Marsha & Jim!) Now when I watch a Charles Bronson movie where he smoking a pipe I know know probably what it would smell like. This is a very mild English blend, but still does have a pleasant taste to it. I loved the back story on Kramer's, so I ordered English, New and Father. After several bowls of each, I couldn't tell one from the other so I ordered Danny and Cary. Still couldn't tell any of them apart. They now all reside in a single jar labeled Kramer's.
