Went to my local brick and mortar on the hunt for some capstan which they’d unfortunately never heard of and saw a tin of this looking lonely amongst their stock of more well known blends. 5 year old Virginia? Yes please, I said. Popped the tin later that night and meh, pretty forgettable stuff. Came back the next day to revisit and it was a completely different experience. Maybe it just needed some air like tobacco sometimes does. It had been there for a long time in the store, I suspect. It was sweet, beautifully sour, and a little smoky. I kept puffing in disbelief that it could be that good. Honestly, I already want to go back out into the freezing cold for another bowl and I just came back inside. It's very average. If you like dark Virginias to the point that really any darkened and matured Virginia ribbon will do, it might appeal to you. This one hasn't done much for me. It won't be hard to ignore it in my cellar, so we'll get to see what 20-year Virginias will be like.

Last year's batch was pure delicious delight. This year... What the hell happened? I found this year's batch to be a complete let down. Flat, and oddly flavored, I have no idea what is going on here. Smelled great in the tin, but I've tried out of 4 different pipes so far and I feel fairly disappointed. This bummed me out. Edit: I was hasty with this review. After about 15 minutes in the open air, and a week in the jar, this blend is almost everything I expected it to be, I just had to slow down a little....Read More
