Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

What becomes irksome are the flakes themselves. They come in dark strips, much like beef jerky, and they don't rub out easily. The best method I've found is to tear little bits off and gravity fill it. Even though it's an inconvenience it doesn't detract from my recommendation of the blend itself. Read Less

18年的FVF，开盖湿度仍然“喜人”，头段的劲道较大，过鼻有不错的刺激感；中段以后变得柔顺很多，整体的劲道不小。主线的味道是果干面包味淡奶味，整体的变化不多。整体的调味是偏V草的原味，烟气感觉偏厚重。考虑到价格、需要陈化、醒草、抽吸技巧以及最终呈现的口感，个人感觉这款烟草有点被神话。不太适合新手，V草能达到并超过这款草的选择有很多。

o a Ready Rubbed at least. Since most tobaccos of Samuel Gawith are soaking wet, first I spread out the rubbed tobacco on a dish to let it dry overnight.
Out of theses Virginias I detect aromas of hay, yeast, citrus, spice, wood, ample earth and pepper. Therefore it’s not one-dimensional, but it’s not a complex, deep digging mixture either. I would not call it harmonious, as there are “edges” and occasional harshness with palate-burn. Bloody high nic-hit! Without hesitation I categorize it “very strong”. If you draw softly and at a slow pace it mellows, though. Unfortunately I perceive an indefinable artificial casing, almost reminding me of a kind of dreadful Lakeland essence. Why not leaving these Virginias natural? There is ample sweetness around, but still ok. Virginia always donates natural sweetness, although, I think there is some sweet topping. Burns cool, evenly and quite slow, with one or two relights only.
I tried to deliver a fair review, but frankly, I cannot cope with this mixture. Read Less

laying with if you are going to roll it out in your hand. I rolled a few bowls out, let it dry, and it is really good stuff. I read one review where they said the cut it into cubes. This was my AHA moment with this one. I took out two flakes, cut it into tiny cubes, let it dry for an hour and damn if this isn't the creamy, sweet Virginia I was looking for. and an underlying harshness that nip and tingle the palate. These lend to discomfort in what should otherwise be one of the most comforting and tasty flakes available. This is either from the chemical topping used and/or, as I suspect, more bright leaf VA are present. 5 years of cellaring will mellow much of the harshness associated with these, but why wait on cellaring when there is an alternative? That flavored topping is what I suspect a German manufactured "Aged Virginia Flake" liquid flavoring solution. Throughout pipe tobacco history, it's affirmed by all that Gawith Manufactures some of, if not, the best flakes in the world. Rare and highly sought after, consider your self lucky to obtain measurable quantities. FVF is the benchmark of super high-quality Virginia Flake, and all others are measured against this wonderfully traditional and old recipe. For me, it's a great smoke with a few negatives that can be countered with another brand of flake. Though I still keep modest amounts in the cellar if only for tradition. If you'd like to have a real treat, albeit slightly less flavor and strength than FVF, but considerably smoother, try Mac Baren HH Virginia Flake. It won't give you the strong punch of flavor and nicotine, but it does provide a smooth, consistent profile that's more acceptable for every day enjoyment. Nicotine is 3.5 out of 5. Read Less

icotine is the typical of Gawith, meaning somewhat strong as compared to others. Being a straight Virginia, without any blended or condiment tobacco, it allows for the hay-and-grass-like flavors to shine. there was a noticeable decline in flavor when rubbed out.
Give it about half an hour of dry time, and fold and stuff this bad boy for a malty almost molasses smoke.
I usually don’t bother to fold and stuff a flake, but this one just isn’t the same rubbed out, at least not to me. Also, it almost needs to be crispy dry, otherwise I have a hard time keeping it lit.

浓郁甜美的果香在口腔中炸裂开来。稍许轻微的辣味刺激着舌头的味蕾。含量不低的尼古丁让心脏的跳速变快了。我觉得FVF的一切都是恰到好处，不高不低的斗温，刺激性和辣度也是有一些些。但是缺少这些又仿佛少了点什么。

ose damn wet tobacco was gone , change to very smooth crystal in every corner of tobacco , you will not suffer for packing, can full rub, or torn to pieces, and i still consider not for fold and stuff .
this is classic virginia in my opinion, smooth grassy virginia with kind of just a little bit peppery of it, i dont know where this peppery came from as i dont find others substance except virginia. burns very well, not much re lighting. Read Less

入坑时候就是抽的fvf，近期又抽了盒10年的老草，现在已是完全的黑褐色切片了，闻起来是类似果脯枣泥的甜味，切片整体有些偏干，加湿后揉散装填，抽吸异常柔顺平滑，明显的甜味且富于变化，烟气淳厚而有满足感，非常的舒服。没给满分是因为新草品质已大不如前。

Those incendiary, burning sensations played in my mouth—that was merely the sugar (found in a higher level in Virginias than in burley) heating up on the roof of my mouth, along my tongue and in my nasal cavities, cautioning me to slow my gallop to a steady plodding.
That tin art—well this is, after all, what Conan Doyle had as Sherlock’s preferred blend.
As for the tin note: it’s somewhere between a green tea and some other type of tea. I placed my nose well into the tin against the great leaf and inhaled many a time. It’s tea every time. Definitely an agreeable feature.
Though this does not resemble my go-to blends, I believe Samuel Gawith achieves its goal with this offering: to produce a perfect, natural medium-bodied Virginia blend, riding confidently on its own natural merits, unadulterated by toppings, Lakeland or otherwise.

is simply amazing stuff, and I highly doubt that any blender anywhere would be able to replicate—or even get within the ballpark of—this flake. The one and only thing that might put some people off (aside from its scarcity) is the difficulty of preparation. S.G. flakes are notoriously difficult to dry out, and this is no exception. Personally I have no issue with the prep time, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Again, what they say is true; FVF is the king of hot-pressed Virginia flakes. This is the polar opposite of those light, grassy, and citrus-y Virginia flakes, and I love it. Read Less

most reviewed tobaccos. First off, it's a relatively strong VA. Using the DGT method will reduce or eliminate any bite or harshness if encountered. Regardless, I knew instantly that I was going to like this blend. After about 5 or 6 tokes, It developed a sweet taste/flavor. Then I set the pipe aside & let it cool completely. When I tamped & relit, it was heavenly... sweet, creamy clouds of thick smoke, great flavor with a smooth & mellow quality that smoked mildly and had some Vitamin N punch to it. I think there are three different types of Virginias in this blend & is also an excellent blending VA. It is very comfortable on the palate & has a relatively slow burn rate & at about $20.00 for three tins back in 2010, I felt this was a real bargain even though it was quite moist. However, the burn rate compensated for that & even the room note had a slight sweet aroma to it. I was totally satisfied with my first sampling & understood why this is such a popular VA blend. It is excellent, exceptional even & is probably about the best VA blend on the planet next to the now, obsolete Royal Yacht Mixture & this, coming from about a one year old tin... imagine what a little more aging might do to FVF. hen I first tried it several years ago when I first started smoking a pipe. It also takes experience to get the best flavor out of this one but once you got it, it will not let you down. This is also very satisfying in the nicotine department as most straight VA's usually leave a lot to be desired as far as that's concerned. Once you properly dry and rub out the flake (I don't recommend the stuff and fold method with this one) it will easily light and smoke all the way to the bottom of the bowl. I don't really get the grassy hay-like flavor from this one instead I get more of a yeasty, bread-like flavor and it's extremely rich and creamy. One of the reviewers said that it tastes like buttered pancakes and I absolutely agree with him on that one. I usually prefer straight Virginia's in the warmer months and this one is no exception. The room note on this is amazing and in fact it's the only blend my wife actually enjoys the smell of when I smoke it near her. It really doesn't get much better than this my friends.

다른연초들은 접하지않아도 이해된다고 본다. 하지만 이연초는 분명 담배의 기본적인 부분이 아주 충실한 연초이다. 화학적 설탕이 주는 달달함이 아닌 자연이 주는 아주 조금씩 올라오는 달달함에 혀가 춤을 춘다. 그래서 이연초는 나의 주식이 되어버렷다. 아마도 한국에 있는 고수또한 이연초를 즐기지않는 사람은 없다고 본다. 계속 나오길 바란다

핫프레스더 연초의 기본이나 불 지피기도 불유지도 스킬이 필요하다.
잘피우면 황홀한 맛이 나지만 조금만 방심하면 불만 부치다 만다.
맛을 느끼기 시작하면 빠져든다.
스킬이 되면 너무도 훌륭한 연초고 부족하면 나쁜 연초가된다.
묵히면 또 어떨지 궁금해서 주문을 또하게 된다.

you dry the flake out just right, it makes for a very good smoke that you will want more of.And , I have have been lucky enough to have been able to sample "aged FVF" and just looking at an aged flake , with a fresh flake beside it , you will see the sugars, that have formed on the flake. This is "Full Virginia Flake " its sweet, creamy , smoky, has different flavors, depending on how fast or slow you smoke it, or on wether or not you are folding a flake and stuffing it, or rubbing it out a bit.
