About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

A bold blend, Samuel Gawith's Lakeland Dark is a combination of air-cured Virginias and Dark-Fired Kentucky. The tobaccos are first cold pressed for several hours and, then, steam pressed at high heat for several more hours, adding body and strength for a robust yet creamy smoke. While also available in a flake, this particular version of Lakeland Dark has been tumbled into a broken flake before being tinned.

very nice!

Product: Samuel Gawith Lakeland Dark 50g
Tin note fire cured, slightly sweet and cardamom like scent. The tobacco is black and dark brown broken flake, mostly already rubbed out. Could use a little drying, burns consistently once lit, requires relights. The strength overall is strong, starting off a little more than med getting stronger as it goes. The nic isn't as strong. No flavoring detected, or rather any I could recognize, despite tin note. The taste is full, and consistent. Notes of leathery wood, slightly sweet, very spicy and minor floral. Kentucky is driving, with Virginia riding shotgun. Has an almost intolerable room note, but a nice after taste....Read More
It's No 1792 Flake, But...

Product: Samuel Gawith Lakeland Dark 50g
It's pretty good. It's a bit richer, smokier, grassier, etc than 1792 because there's no luxurious creaminess from tonquin to counteract these aspects. But if this truly is "unscented 1792" it's clear that it's not just the topping making it a wonderful blend.

This is the stuff! Earthy and smooth. I only wish this was always available and could purchase by the pound.

Product: Samuel Gawith Lakeland Dark 50g
Out of all of the Gawith blends and all other lakelands I've tried, I'd have to say this is probably the best one. I say, "probably", because it did take me some time to settle on that conclusion, but I'm quite confident it, "probably", is. Lol At any rate, it has that great traditional Gawith base flavor profile and base aroma that, to me, is almost like warm wood. Even almost like the interior of a sauna at times. Add to that it has, "probably", the best use of Lakeland essence in any blend in my experience and it's a winner in my book. I find it's great on the back porch of a northern Michigan cottage during first light on a fall morning....Read More
Cheroots for your Pipe

Product: Samuel Gawith Lakeland Dark 50g
This is a lovely Kentucky forward blend. Despite the name, there's no hint of Lakeland essence, and is most similar to a Toscano cigar. If you're used to Kentucky tobacco, I find this mild and enjoyable enough to enjoy in the morning with a cup of coffee without keeling oneself over. Strongly recommended....Read More
