About This Pipe
Karl Robert Kris began exploring new business opportunities post-World War II due to difficulties in the shipping industry, turning to pipes in his hometown of Kolding, Denmark, at the age of 47. Kris began with only a few employees but quickly expanded to need a new factory in the mid-1950s, and what was known as Kriswell became Kriswill as part of a compromise with fellow Danish marque Stanwell.
This Volcano from Kriswill is only barely conical, with a minute point at the intersection of heel and fore wall and a very slight slope to the bottom of the aft wall. The rest of the bowl appears perfectly straight, giving this piece an unusual profile for its titular shape. The grain is quite attractive, especially the high stretch of flame grain that marks the bowl's right flank and reaches back to the shank, as well. The tapered vulcanite stem finishes the piece with a subtle bend back to the bit, finishing this piece of uniquely subtle lines.
