About This Pipe
J. Alan pipes are handmade in San Diego, California by Jeff Gracik, the artisan imbuing his work with a distinctly Danish aesthetic while hewing close to the style of the American masters, expertly balancing plump curves with robust musculature. This Apple is a fantastic example of that style, presenting an exceptionally soft pipe that fits well in the hand while maintaining a hearty, substantial presence. The transition here is wide, with ample space to drape a digit if desired, and it gives way to a rather thick shank that makes a very slight taper toward its end, its slight extension drawing a bit of visual weight away from the bowl as it reaches out to meet a subtly domed horn ferrule. This ferrule acts as the junction to a slim saddle stem of black vulcanite whose base has been highlighted with a slim expansion ring, drawing a touch more visual weight away from the bowl thanks to the small area of negative space between the two. Up front, the bowl stands on a rounded heel and grows broad, round walls that arc smoothly toward a chamfered rim, their travel marked by a slight forward cant. The supple contours of the bowl make for a lovely fit in hand, and its immediate silhouette reminds me of certain Apple renditions crafted by renowned Danish artisan Former, leaving plenty of space to showcase dense seas of birdseye from beneath a warm, chestnut-toned contrast stain.
