About This Pipe
Dublin-born artisan Austin Quinlan got his start in restoring old pipes before eventually venturing into crafting his own pieces. Today, he's known for producing pipes that mostly fall within the Anglo-French shape chart, though he does occasionally lean into Danish or Japanese shaping cues. This bent Apple from the Irish artisan is a nuanced take on the classic shape, and it showcases his penchant for precise engineering and meticulous craftsmanship.
The bowl exhibits a touch of forward-urging momentum, thanks to the slant of its aft wall. This illusion of momentum is furthered by the upturned shank-and-stem arrangement, whose posture is poised for a comfortable clench. Being made of olivewood, the stummel displays some gorgeous, distinctive grain that swirls around like wisps of smoke. A briar mount completes the stummel, introducing some new tones and textures that complement rather than compete with those of the olivewood. The stem's cumberland finish adds some depth and richness to the palette, its brindled burgundy streaks standing out against the light, unstained finish of the stummel.
