About This Pipe
Ardor has its roots in Sociedade Rovera, a pipe-making firm founded in Varese, Italy, in 1911 by the four brothers Rovera. Angelo Rovera, son of Sociedade Rovera co-founder Francesco, founded Ardor in 1974 with his son Dorelio, and today the company's pipes are crafted from briar left to age for a decade. Ardor is nestled in close proximity to competitors Savinelli, Radice, Castello, and Caminetto, yet another example of the rich northern Italian practice of pipe making.
This bent Bulldog features Ardor's partially rusticated Urano finish, with the rustication covering most of the shank, the underside of the bowl, and the rim. Though relatively deep, the rustication offers an easy grip and contrasts nicely with the smoothly finished flame grain and birdseye that wraps the bowl above the bead lines. A patterned, bent saddle stem and pseudo-military mount give this pipe a flash of showmanship, as do the curves of the shank and the taper of the upper bowl, which is much steeper than typical of a Bulldog. It's a playful piece that well lives up to the name of the line of Ardors that it hails from — Fantasy.
