About This Pipe
Ardor has its roots in Sociedade Rovera, a pipe making firm founded in Varese, Italy, in 1911 by the four brothers Rovera. Angelo Rovera, son of Sociedade Rovera co-founder Francesco, founded Ardor in 1974 with his son Dorelio, and today the company's pipes are crafted from briar left to age for a decade. Ardor is nestled in close proximity to competitors Savinelli, Radice, Castello, and Caminetto, yet another example of the rich northern Italian practice of pipe making.
Alveare translates simply to "beehive" in English, a most appropriate title for the finish on this Acorn given the thick, smooth bands around the bowl that are separated by deep, carved ridges. The shape of the bowl is classically Acorn, but you'll certainly be thinking more of a stereotypical beehive shape when you look at or hold this piece. The bands, making up the beehive look of the bowl, are shallowly carved themselves to lend an even more interesting touch to the hand. The round shank is similarly carved on top and connects to a translucent stem of amber acrylic with a wide bit. It's a piece that manages at once to adhere to a classic shape while still daring to be very different.
