About This Pipe

At 15, William (Bill) Ashton-Taylor began his pipe-making career by signing under Alfred Dunhill. Starting as an intern and affiliated 'tea boy,' Bill retained a keen interest in pipe making. Eventually, this sparked the attention of Harry Saigrott, who began showing Bill the artistry of pipe making. By 1983, Bill founded Ashton Company, setting a high standard for craftsmanship and the quality of materials used. Bill passed away in 2009, but pipe maker Jimmy Craig proudly carries on the Ashton name.

Ashton is known for their classic English shaping, stylish sandblasts, and brindled vulcanite stems, all of which are evident when viewing this Dublin. This piece pairs a tall, muscular bowl with a flared rim to an arrow-straight shank-and-stem arrangement. The sleek, elegant lines of the shank and stem lend the bowl most of the composition's visual weight, while also keeping the pipe streamlined and tidy in profile. The dark, craggy Brindle sandblast dresses the stummel and brings vivid definition to the briar. Topped by a stem of orange and red hues, this piece offers plenty of visual and tactile appeal as well as a comfortable in-hand presence.
