Carlo Scotti brought the Castello brand to life in the late 1940s, crafting his pipes in the same shadow of the Alps as the likes of Savinelli and the Rovera family. Scotti's workshop would eventually yield the independent workshops of Caminetto and Radice, both founded by former Castello artisans, but the Castello tradition continues today with the neoclassic designs that make northern Italy such an influential player in the industry of pipe making.

Of the very few pipes that receive Castello's prestigious Pezzo Unico designation — that's "unique piece" if you don't speak Italian — even fewer are sold, as most end up being shown off in Castello's museum. This bent Dublin, however, made it out of the workshop and into our inventory, where its incredible flame grain that covers every square inch of the stummel is a welcome addition to our site. Finished smooth to allow those lovely tendrils to shine their brightest and shaped into a well-canted Dublin with great care but also a great sense of playfulness, this pipe represents the very best of Castello's work in style. You'd be forgiven for not paying so much attention to the shape, though — the uniformly straight flame grain is that intense, that incredible, and that beautiful.

This pipe is also part of Castello's Big line, and lives up to that designation very well — the bowl is a whopping 2.46 inches deep and surrounded by a thick helping of plateau, and the entire piece measures 7.26 inches in length with the perfect fitting of a wide, tapered acrylic stem thrown in. It comes gently cradled in its own softly-lined wooden box, complete with a note from Castello certifying that its creation from superb, more-than-decade-old Tuscan briar was completed on October 24, 2023, and represents the very best their artisans have to offer.
