Todd Johnson Pipes

What makes a work of art beautiful? Moderation, balance and proportion defined Greek art and architecture for over 500 years. Todd Johnson’s work could be most aptly characterized as a fusion of his Danish high-grade roots and his fascination with Greek art, architecture and culture. A sculptor with briar as his medium, Todd Johnson has a fascinating and complex aesthetic, drawing on both of these sources, as well as seeking inspiration from other artistic traditions. Having been trained as a classicist, Todd Johnson is imbued with this Greek vision, which helps to define his aesthetic. Todd Johnson frequently overlays classical Greek styling on traditional Danish shapes. The Danish influence that comes from studying under Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson, combined with his classical vision, offers Todd a robust aesthetic tradition, from which he explores a new and fascinating pipe making aesthetic.

Johnson grades his pipes using a four-digit stamp, with the last two digits indicating the year of manufacture; for example, a pipe stamped “3525” was crafted in 2025. Save for his highest grade, the “Q,” which is produced in limited quantities.
